found this about catalina:

"1406-18  Regent  Dowager Queen  Catalina de Lancaster of Castilla (Spain)
Widow of Enrique III (1379-90-1406) she was joint regent with Fernando de Antequera for son, Juan II (1405-06-54).   She was an active regent, involved in financial matters, using her influence in negotiation about matrimonies and peace-treaties in the most important European nations. She was daughter of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster and Aquitaine (1340-99) and his second wife, Constance, titular Queen of Castile (1354-94) whose father, Pedro I of Castile and Leon (1350-69), was succeeded by a brother. Catalina was considered heiress of Castilla and married her half-cousin, King Enrique, and became the mother of 1 son and 2 daughters, and lived (1374-1418)."

Thanks ilyala.  ;) It's good to know that Catalina was a good regent!

Thanks Umigon!  :) So Catalina was already married before Constanza's death! She was probably brought up with Spanish as her first language. BTW, didn't Constanza's sister Isabel marry John's brother Edmund?

I don't think this has been answered, so here goes:
Isabel of Castile was indeed married to John of Gaunt's brother Edmund, Duke of York (1341-1402).  They had 3 children: Edward D of York, killed at Agincourt in 1415; Richard Earl of Cambridge, excuted in  1415; and Constance, Lady Despenser (briefly Countess of Gloucester).  Edmund and Isabel married in 1372, and she died in 1392.  In 1393 Edmund (aged 52) got married again, to Joan Holland (age 13).  Oh lovely...... :-/

Addition to my last post: Edmund and Isabel's tombs are still extant, in the parish church at King's Langley.  Edmund's skeleton has been examined, and apparently he was 5 feet 11 inches tall!  Gives you some idea of the height of the family, I suppose!  BTW, Edward I (died 1307) was 6 feet 2, and Richard II (died 1400) was a fraction under 6 feet.
