Prince Potemkin
« on: August 07, 2004, 09:20:24 PM »
Simon Sebag Montefiore has written a marvelously  researched biography on Prince Potemkin. Here is a fascinating article  "Prince Potemkin and the Benthams: Simon Sebag Montefiore describes an unlikely project to create an English village in Belorussia involving Catherine the Great's lover and the philosopher Jeremy Bentham and his brother".

I am very curious of Simon's future books!

Joanna,

Montefiore has just published a new book called Stalin, The Court of the Red Tsar.

I have this book but it is hidden amongst other "to be read pile". I heard his radio interview discussing the book.  However I doubt that it will provide any really new accounts not found in other books/documentaries about Stalin and his inner circle.

He is a brilliant writer, absolutely the best researcher I think, incredible attention to detail. Astonishing stuff. I love his books. I wish he would write a book about the Romanovs, he is sure to unearth things we have never heard of. He has a habit of finding things ( all indexed and referenced) that other writers dont. But I think so much has been written about the last family that most biographers and historians view the subject with a jaundiced eye. Have you read his book on Catherine ll ?
