In a nutshell, Henrietta Maria was chosen to marry Charles because she had a very large dowry.  At the time of their marriage, Charles was deeply in debt and desperate for cash.

Almost all of the available Protestant princesses were in Germany, which was in the throes of the Thirty Years War.  Marrying one of them would not bring Charles any political advantage, and certainly wouldn't bring him any money.

i'm sure the money counted a lot, but i don't think it was the only reason... i think it was all the reasons stated above combined. she was probably the most appealing princess available...
