Governess Eagar
« on: January 08, 2006, 03:43:24 AM »
Hello to all members.
Im delighted to have joined this website forum.Firstly because I have so much interest in the Romonov dynasty.
I was introduced to the Last imperialist family of Russia, through a book I found in my Granparents attic.

The book is entitled: Life Of Cardinal Manning
Author: Edmund Sheridan Purcell.

There is an inscription wrote inside in black ink as follows.

To Miss M. Eagar,
With Best wishes for a happy Easter,
fr,
Alexandra.

April14/27th 1902.
St. Petersburg.

I have brought this book to Sothebys in london and they have authenticated the signature to be that of The great Tsarina Alexandra Romonov.

I know Miss Eagar was the governess of the children, but information on her life afterwards is vague.Does anyone have any information on this woman.I have nearly spent two years of research trying to trace some history on Miss Eagar.

Also if some member would be interested in this book, let me know.

Regards Greg

This book that I have, well, has also newspaper clippings inside, from what I can gather are from The Irish Catholic Newspaper 1924.
One clipping in brief is titled CARDINAL MANNING REMEMBERED. I will just give you a brief introduction as to what it says....

"Ramsay Macdonald himself will be led by these remarks of the reigning Cardinal to think of that wet, foggy London day when the body of another great Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church was bourne through the streets of England's capital to its humble grave in Kensal Green,a grave that was decorated by two wreaths:one a cross of lillies of the valley from Queen Alexandra,at its head,...........

Now I dont know the signifacance of this passage. Was Cardinal Manning a friend of Alexandra? Was the governess Eagar a friend of The Cardinal.

Also this book I have ,apparently was bought in an auction in Boyle, Co.Roscommon, Ireland.in 1935 by a priest Fr.Dervin.

He was a friend of my grandparents, but sadly passed away many years ago.I would just love to know what became of Margaret Eagar. And where did she live in her late years after the "six years at the russian courts"
When I was in the Alexandra Palace Time Machine forums,I did happen to get in contact with a Charlotte Eagar,of whom she is related to M.Eagar.Unfortunately I have lost correspondence with this lady,as I was quite ill last year, and just had not the time nor energy to pursue this dream of mine.

Regarding the sale of this book,I do not know what this book has to offer yet.I have also discovered hair in parts of the book...who knows who they are ?I did hear somewhere that this was a tradition in the romonov family to cut bits of hair and put them in books??
