As I've already noticed somewhere, one of the purposes of the Standard's long sailings was allowing its officers to gain promotion scores. It was mandatory for a naval officer to make long sailings to get promoted and to receive regular service awards.

You are very correct Mike..   Plus, on these long voyages the crew did not have to be concerned with the day and night comfort of the Imperial family.   The long voyage was basically training and  relaxation for the crew.

That's right, but for the crew training in a more relaxed setting the Standard could just sail between Russian Baltic port - Kronstadt, Reval, Helsingfors and Libau. However such cruises weren't counted as "long voyages" on officers' service records.

thanks for posting.   I do not think I have ever seen that photo.....wow is correct.

You're welcome. The size is amazing of course , but what also strikes me is the great depth of the carving....of the feathers etc.

  11-4-18.    Is that the date of the printing or publication of the photo? In some German source?  If it's 1918, it's post-Russian Revolution, or rather, post-Nicholas II's reign.  Just wondering.

It is not exactly the Standart's band: the bands on the musicians' caps read "Polyarnaya Zvezda". But they do play aboard the Standart. Interesting photo.

I can't actually read it, either. But I can see there are two words, which rules out "Standart." ;^)

Mike, are  you saying this is not the Standart's  band, but they are playing on the Standart in this photo?   Could the band play for some event when the family is not using the ship? It seems odd the public is so close in this photo . Thanks

Not so sure about the excellence of my vision... The two words on the caps' bands more probably are ГВАРДЕЙСКИЙ ЭКИПАЖ [Guards Equipage] rather than ПОЛЯРНАЯ ЗВЕЗДА [Polyarnaya Zvezda]. If true, there is nothing unusual about their playing aboard the Standart: the ship was part of the Guards Equipage.
