I didn't know where to post this, so "Russian names" sounds like a good place. You know how all the late night Comedians make fum of Bush and try to show how stupid he is with clips of his "Bushisms?" Well, Jay Leno blew it. This was a week or two ago. He showed a video of Bush and Putin standing at podiums, and Bush thanked 'Mrs. Putina" for the fine meal. Well, Leno made a big joke out of this, saying, come on, his name is "Putin", why call his wife "Putina" how stupid is that? He laughed at himself, the entire audience laughed, and he went on about how stupid Bush was. Well, turns out, in this case, Bush was right,(though I am sure someone told him!)  because you do add the 'a' to the end of a Russian female surname! So Leno (and his writers) are wrong! All those people n the audience were wrong, too. I wonder if anyone else caught this mistake besides me?

Annie,

i believe you are making reference to the first name of a female, (for those of Russian names) not their last name....so in that you are incorrect.....one cannot add, and never needs to add an "a" to the end of their last name.

I really enjoy how Russian is written. It's written exoctically yet not so exoctic that it's impossible to translate. My brother who has spent several months in China was saying how confusing the language is. I do also enjoy how Chinese is written, especially when calligraphy is done.
