Am I weird?
« on: November 25, 2011, 03:15:22 PM »
(Not sure if this is the right place for this, so it can be moved if needs must)
I have just finished reading a beautiful book called 'The House of Special Purpose' by John Boyne (Not the awful one I posted about, this is a different one). It was wonderfully written, but very badly researched, and was the story of Anastasia being saved by a peasant and living in London.
However, when it got to the bit where she left the Ipatiev house with him and was so distressed at witnessing the murder of her family, I was in tears and found myself feeling glad that she never had to suffer the loss and guilt that she survived. Is this horribly wrong of me? Am I seeing this wrong?

I would not consider you so, Isabelle! Not in the least; in fact I would probably have felt the same way! Knowing how very close the whole family was, I cannot think how very grieved one of them would have been had they been a survivor, in fact, so upset that they likely wouldn't have recovered. The tormenting memories surely would have haunted them and I know that the Imperial family must be happy together now, so, however extremely tragic and unjust their assassination was, it was probably for the best that they all died together. The mere thought of seeing ones family be shot in front of ones eyes....oh, how awful! I mean, of course it would be nice on some aspects had a Grand Duchess survived, and yet when you really think about it.... To conclude, I do not think that it is weird to be glad that no one survived. My opinion is: everybody or nobody!

I don't think you're weird either.  You enjoyed a good story.

Well, that's a relief. I totally agree with you though Andrea, all or nobody!
