what HEMOPHILIA means
« on: January 27, 2006, 08:14:20 PM »
in scientific form hemo means blood and philia means love. their for hemophilia means blood love. very weird i know.
hemophiliac means blood lover. so its really a weird name for a disease but it fits it becuase with love you gets lots and lots of it. and a hemophiliac gets lots and lots of flowing blood.
why hemophiliacs bleed so much when they get a bruise is becuase their blood is missing the hemoglobin that clots the blood when a blood vessel is bumped or damaged.

The "-philia" suffix can also mean "tendency toward," so "hemophilia" in this case means something like "tendency toward bleeding/letting out blood."

Yes, Tati-fan's explanation is a bit more accurate, idiomatically speaking (if such can be used for Latin).

Thanks to both of you for clearing this up for everyone else!
