My beloved Nicholas

Happy birthday!
I will always remember You and Your beautiful family!
Rest in peace.

(I just had to say that my father gave me today a silver coin where is Nicky`s profile. It was quite surprising ^^)

Yes, I always 'celebrate' this day, too (May 19) as it lines up with Job's day on the Russian calendar.  Usually I do not mention this to my acquaintances because I have gotten quite inflammatory remarks from other people about him -- 'he got what he deserved,' etc.  But I am clear in my own mind that he was not only a good man but a great man. This is not to suggest that he was a great leader, that is a different matter.  However, I, as an ordinary middle-class muggle, have experienced some of his personal challenges, and fare as best I can, but cannot imagine shouldering his responsibility on top of Alexei's disease, etc.  Probably history will never fully accept this more empathetic vantage point, but I am grateful to see the harsh view of him softening slightly.

May 18th

This probably does not belong in this specific thread.  Please place it where it does belong if you wish.

Lucien

Even though the family tree is in Spanish, it is not hard to translate, at least into English.

I find it interesting that Alexei is known as Alejandro in Spanish.

Thank you for posting this.

Try this link.  I don't know much about astrology, but this page seems to have everything one would need to explain what the chart is and how to read it.

Czar Nicholas II of Russia has frequent emotional outbursts due to his fiery temper and emotional impulsiveness. Czar Nicholas II expresses himself very directly and honestly and no one has to guess what his true feelings are. However, Czar Nicholas II of Russia dislikes showing any personal weakness or his need for support, comfort and nurturing. He is often impatient with himself and others. Tsar Nicholas II abhors emotional dependency and dislikes "complainers".

So far, it looks like they are wrong!

The astrology may have gone wrong, but it's far more amazing in my opinion as a premonition that he was born on the day of st.Job... Job's story is told in the Bible: he was a man that had an unbelievable series of misfortunes (included the death of all his children) but never gave up his faith nor got rebel against God. A really striking coincidence, I think!

Indeed. Before that, thus he had everything - he was one wealthy man. And then God put him into probation - killing all his children, pershing all his properties. And Job had never lost hope and believing. It is comparable to Nicholas' story.

Actually, on the modern Western calendar, Nicholas II's birthday is indeed the 19th of May. He was born on 6 May according to the Julian Calendar. When he was born, this was the 18th of May according to the Gregorian Calendar. Within his lifetime, the difference between the calendars widened - so, the Tsar, (for example) would have celebrated his 10th birtday on 6 May 1878 according to the Russian Calendar. That same day, Princess Alix of Hesse would have thought it to be 18 May 1878. Nicholas II celebrated his 40th birthday on 6 May 1908 according to the Russian Calendar - over in England, King Edward VII would have been reading a newspaper with the date 19 May 1908 written on it, as the gap between the calendars lengthened one day with the start of the 20th Centuray (but not with the 21st century). A check on an Orthodox Calendar that shows both styles of dates would confirm that the day of St Job is 6 May/19 May (Julian/Gregorian).

Not in Russia, because of the 13 day calendar difference. St Nicholas (of Myra in Lycaea) is celebrated at least twice a year 6/19 December and also (I think off hand) in May, when his relics were transferred to Bari. Not sure, but think the Tsar might have celebrated his Name Day on the May date, being closer to his birthday.

You are correct. Here it is celebrated on Dec. 19th, and I agree that most likely Nicholas marked it in MAy.

A very Happy Birthday to Nicholas II (it's the 19th where I am).  Hope you and family are having a B-Day blast on the Other Side.
