Kschessinska's Memoirs
« on: February 25, 2005, 10:18:01 AM »
I was looking on ebay and I saw this book listed but its in Russian. It seems to have many nice photos and information about Kschessinska and her affiar with the Romanov men.
Is this a reprint of her orignal memoirs? And does anyone know if this is avaliable in English?

Dancing in St Petersburg was published some years ago in the USA,  and copies are plentiful.  Coryne Hall's bio on Mathilde is due out in the spring from Sutton.

Hi Ashanti,

I have the Russian copy that I bought last year in Russia. I believe it does come from her original memoirs with some stuff added.

There is a Russian language edition which was printed in 2004. Your copy must have been very new? The Russian edition has a nicer cover showing the Marinsky Theater and two pleasant images of the ballerina. The images inside however are the same as those contained in the English edition.  ;D

Yes, 'Dancing in Petersburg' (1960) has 48 pages of black and white photos, of which about half are of Mathilde in various costumes from ballets, and in real life. Coryne Hall's brilliant 'Imperial Dancer' (2005) has sixteen pages of photographs, including many new ones, and really tells the full story of Mathilde's life and career. I think you need both books to understand her fully, but if I had to choose one it would be 'Imperial Dancer'.

Kschessinska certainly doesn't dance around her affairs with the Romanov men.  ;)

Is the Russian version of Kschessinska's memoirs exactly the same as "Dancing in St Petersburg"? Does anyone know?

Yes the book is exactly the same. It is much cheaper than the English version and goes under a different title Vospominaniya. (Memoirs)
