From Cradle to Crown: British Nannies & Govern
« on: January 28, 2006, 12:44:42 PM »
Has anyone heard of this book? I was browsing on Amazon.co.uk and they had this book: "From Cradle to Crown: British Nannies and Governesses at the World's Royal Courts" by Charlotte Zeepvat. I like her works and I was wondering if anyone else had this book?

It is a new book that - according to Amazon - will become available in April 2006.
"The Correspondence of the Empress Alexandra of Russia with Ernst Ludwig and Eleonore, Grand Duke and Duchess of Hesse. 1878-1916"
"Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig and Princess Alix of Hesse and by Rhine in Italy - 1893"
"Ludwig IV, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine - Gebhard Zernin's Festschrift"

Although it says that Helen, you can order it directly--there's no icon to preorder it, only one to add it to your shopping basket. I've seen this happen before, like with Imperial Dancer. Perhaps the date given is an estimate?

The date is indeed an estimate, and there are no real guarantees that it will be availabale by the date Amazon stated. I just mentioned April to make clear to Angie that it is not very likely that anyone on this forum other than people who were allowed to read the manuscript will be able to say anything about the contents of this book.

Perhaps. It does look very interesting though! I've always been curious about the English nannies who seemingly every royal family had at some point or another.....

I got advance copies of Charlotte Zeepvat's new book From Cradle to Crown.

It is quite an interesting read and contains a considerable number of vignettes dealing with the nannies, nurses and governesses that shaped the personalities of members of the Russian imperial family in particular, and of European royalty in general.  I had been skeptical about the book...but after the first chapter was hooked and spent most of yesterday reading it...fascinating points of v iew on may of the royals we know so very mucmh about, as well as of those lesser known to the majority of royal watchers.

Charlotte will sign and dedicate copies of the book. If interested simply email  me.

I think it is quite nice...and I really usually do not like history told in this way.  However, having been raised by a nanny who continues to work at our home and is part of the family, now as companion to my mother, the book caught my atttention within the first few pages.

Charlotte has effectively told the stories of these very important women who took care of their royal charges in far better ways than their own parents would have.  It is also very intersting to see how the families and their nannies interacted.  Can you imagine this scenario: St. Petersburg, Alexander III and his brothers walking behind a funeral carriage through the streets of Petersburg...yes...they did...not for their father, but for their nanny!!

Could anybody please tell us more about the book? Is it only about nannies and their royal charges? About which countries is it? Russia? Germany? GB?

The subtitle is British Nannies and Governesses at the World's Royal Courts.

Here's the synopsis on amazon.uk

In the nineteenth and twentieth century the wealthiest and most fashionable families across the world wanted British women to run their nurseries and educate their children. Nowhere was this more true than in the royal Courts. From Scandinavia to the Balkans, the future rulers of Europe grew up speaking English as their first language, following similar nursery routines and wearing similar clothes. Most remembered their nurses with affection - quite a few owed them their lives. Governesses did not have quite so favourable a reputation, though their role in shaping the future was, if anything, more influential. For the children, these women dominated their earliest memories and often provided their first experiences of affection: at the highest levels of society, mothers were usually distant figures. For the women, these appointments offered an opportunity to travel widely, meet a variety of people unimaginable in their home environments, and gain a privileged glimpse into the life of royalty. Mostly single, the royal governesses and nannies traded their own hopes of marriage and children for a chance to see the world. Some were so valued by the families who employed them that they never returned, being provided with comfortable homes after their employment ended.
