1910 photo with dolls?
« on: January 31, 2006, 12:55:39 AM »
Hello,

Does anyone would know where I can find the full picture? I know it does exists in Michael of Greece's Romanov album, but I can't look at this book anymore, and the picture was cut in half by the book's binding anyway.

I'm posting this here because Tatiana figures on the half I can't find, and I think it's actually a great photo.

Thanks for your help!

Well, it's an interesting photo. And it certainly does bear out what we've read about the Kaiser working very hard to ingratiate himself with the family of the Tsar. Note that most of the Romanov expressions are ones of forbearance, tho' Anastasia does have the beginnings of a smile.

Not only the dolls, the dresses too. Just think about it: they were handmade. OTMA looked like dolls themselves!

I found the text underlying this photo in Michael of Greece Romanov album. (The book that splits the picture in 2  >:( )
I don't know what is this album's original edition, but as my version is in french, I thought my translation might interest someone.

June 4th, 1909, Standart. Tsar Nicholas II, Tsarina Alexandra, their five children and Kaiser Willhem II. Again one of this meetings Willy was looking for, and Niki hated. For another time, it has been impossible to avoid the cumbersome cousin. "Thursday 4th June, writes Nicholas II in his diary, Weather's perfect and hot. In the morning, we've been preparing for Willhem's visit. At 10 o'clock, the Hollenzollern ( the Kaiser's yacht) has arrived with a detachment and has casted ancor. Have joined the Hollenzollern in a small boat. Came back after half an hour, then he soon joined us on the yacht. He had brought generous present for the children..."

I'm not doing that for money or anything, and I know this isn't mine, but please tell me if I'm not allowed to do that because of the copyrights. I don't want to offend anybody.

Oh, and thanks for the other half of the picture! I've looked on Livadia, and there is only the first half in Anastasia's Art Studio.

Yes, the individual lace patterns on their dresses are quite exquisite! Bisque dolls like those would have been indeed been expensive. The quality of the craftsmanship and their apparel (being Grand Duchesses after all) alone would have undoubtedly added significantly to their cost. If you think about it, the number of dolls shown in that photo is rather remarkable.

Yes, the quantities of dolls are remarkable, they enhance the photo. Both otma and the dolls were beautiful alone, but put them together, and it is a compelling image.

I love that picture of the GDs with those georgous antique dolls.    Have a larger version of it framed in my doll room.   I printed it out and had a large picture printed out in BJ's.    Always wondered what he gave Alexie.

Turn of the century doll's clothing often mirrored actual styles. They're not the same--similar, but not the same.

And was it really necessary to bump this thread up?  >:(

Carol used her post to ask a question. I don't recall any ban on questions.  ;)
