and yet I was just admiring Gilliard's description of Olga Nicholaievna's famous" bluntness" when she spoke to Gilliard about the 1914 trip to Romania. As he writes , Olga Nicholaievna addressed him "..with that confident disingenuous frankness which was all her own..." The word "confident" ....adds so much here. It says Olga is secure in her frankness and imo, that brings charm to it... Also the phrase" " All her own..." underlines her uniqueness. Certainly such a manner would stand out in a royal court! Gilliard's description is understated, but full .
I wonder way he would add a date for something like the haircutting, if he was writing from memory . It would be very easy to do as he did, get it wrong.... Are his diaries still in existence.....or were they lost in Russia?
