The clutter !!!! Everyone has expressed an opinion about this, but I think that even in Alexandra's time all these interiors had become dated. She "did" them soon after her marriage, and rooms date after 20 years. Clutter was not that fashionable anymore. She certainly was not prone to any redecorating. She just left everything the way it was in 1895, but just added more stuff. I wonder what it would have looked like had she lived there till say 1930 ?
Also I always notice how badly she hung ( hanged ) the pictures. The groupings are really very badly put together, not symetrical and not forming anything vaguely cohesive at all. Just banged up in any old way, all over the place. Even small items and pictures the same size have the wrong spacings between them.
Guess I am a pain in the butt about things like pictures on walls, but I think I would probably have been running around straightening things out if I was around then !
I like it much better since the renovation, clean and crisp and bright. I think that was the way it was supposed to have been originally, not cozied up.
