Infante Gabriel of Spain and his descendants
« on: February 15, 2006, 08:17:35 AM »
Infanta Dona Mariana Victoria of Portugal was the younger sister of King João VI... when she was 17 she married Infante Gabriel of Spain, a man of the arts...They had three children, and were only married for 3 years...

The month of November 1788 was dramatic to the Portuguese and Spanish Royal Families... Both Gabriel and Mariana and their two younger children died...

The only survivor was Infante Pedro, whom was soon brought to Portugal I believe...

I've never seen a picture of Mariana... and I think this family and descendants would deserve some discussion and pictures.

Here lies my invitation.

I read somewhere that Mariana was beautiful and that when she left for Spain, to portugal came Carlota Joaquina...

People were not glad with the exchange of a beautiful Portuguese Infanta with an ugly Spanish Infanta  ;D

Queen Maria I had some beauty, at least in my opinion, and she was the tallest and more elegant of King José's daughters... Maybe Mariana took after her mother...

Infante Pedro Carlos was a grandson of King Carlos III of Spain and Queen Maria I of Portugal, and the son of Infante Gabriel of Spain and Infanta Mariana Vitória of Portugal... He married his cousin Maria Teresa, Princess of Beira, the eldest daughter of King João VI of Portugal...

I've never seen a good picture of him nor of his mother... does anyone have one available? Or any information about him?

Mariana Vitória is a very unknown Infanta too...

Thanks in advance...

Infante Pedro Carlos of Spain was born in the royal palace of Aranjuez, Spain on 18 June 1786. Two years later his parents, Gabriel and Mariana Victoria, as well as his grandfather, King Charles III of Spain, died. For this reason Queen Maria I of Portugal asked the next Spanish king Charles IV to send Pedro Carlos to the court of Lisbon in order to raise him there. So Pedro Carlos spent most of his childhood in Portugal with the Portuguese royal family and later he joined them in their exile to Brazil, which took place in 1807. Around the time, Pedro Carlos was described as "ignorant, rude and with a vulgar and indecent tongue". However, the regent Joao (later King Joao VI of Portugal) was very fond of him and favored a match between Pedro Carlos and his eldest daughter Infanta Maria Teresa, who was the most beautiful and intelligent of the Portuguese princesses at the time. This match met with the opposition of Joao's wife, Carlota Joaquina, who hated Pedro Carlos with all her heart. When she heard the news about it, she stated that it would have been less painful for her to hear the news about her daughter's death. Nevertheless, Pedro Carlos and Maria Teresa's wedding took place in Rio de Janeiro on 13 May 1810. Their marriage was very happy and they were passionately in love with each other. They only had one son, Infante Sebastian, who was born on 4 November 1811. Shortly after, Pedro Carlos became ill, according to some people because he was exhausted after having too much action in his royal bed. He died on 4 July 1812 in the estate of Boa Vista.

Gabriel of Spain was eleventh child of King Carlos III and Maria Amalia of Saxony. He was born in Portici, 11 May 1752. In 23 May 1785 he married Marianna Victoria of Portugal (Queluz 15 Dec 1768-Escorial 2 Nov 1788). The couple had three children, but only eldest son Pedro survived. Gabriel died just three weeks after his wife. Is it known, why they both died so early? Anything more about them and their short lives? Any pictures (except a beautiful one of Gabriel by Mengs :))? Who (after their death) take a care of their son Pedro?

Gabriel was very intelligent, loved arts (especially music) and was his father's favourite child. His wife, Mariana Victoria of Portugal, tragically died of smallpox; Gabriel and their third child also got infected and that's why they died shortly after her. Their death was a great blow for King Charles III, who also died shortly afterwards.

Their only surviving child, Pedro Carlos, was sent to Portugal to be raised in the court of his maternal grandmother, Queen Maria I. It's interesting that Pedro Carlos was also granted the title of Infante of Portugal, so he was officially a member of both the Spanish and Portuguese royal families.

1) In his very short life, the infant Gabriel of Spain was well-known as a musician and a man very cultivated. He has left in Escurial an important collection of music instruments.
2) His wife Maria Ana Vitoria of Portugal and he died so early due to the epidemic of small-pox which brought about also the death of their younger child,Carlos, dead ten days old!, november 9th 1788. and of the king Charles III, december 12th 1788
3) I think but I am not sure that their elder son, Pedro Carlos ( Aranjuez 1786 - Rio de Janeiro 1812) who was infant of Portugal by his mother was educated by his uncle king of Potugal João VI. On the 29th of november 1808, Pedro Carlos de Borbon y Braganza, infant of Spain and Portugal accompgnied the royal family of Portugal to Brazil.

Thaks REMI and trentk80. What a sad story with this epidemy of smallpox, it reminds me the similar situation in family of Empress Maria Theresia in 1767...
Are there any pictures of the young married couple, Gabriel and Marianna Victoria?

hello

I read sometimes that gabriel's grandson Infant Sebastian faught with carlists against regente queen Cristina. Which role did the Infant really play? Did he marry King Francisco's sister to make peace with queen Isabel II ? Did their sons Francisco, Pedro & Luis assume official duties? or in spanish army?

Hi !

I know that don Sebastian, infante d'Espana & Portugal had several sons with his second wife Cristina, sister of Francisco I, King-consort of Spain
-Francisco
-Pedro
-Luis
-Gabriel
-Alfonso

What about them ? lives, careers, living places, estates?
I know they married into the spanish nobility not into royalty. Why? They were cousins of King Alfonso XII... Maybe there were some projects of marriage with Bourbon princesses for them, or cousins ?
thanks to everyone who can help me :)

Well, they are almost unknown historical figures, but here you are a brief info about their lives.

The marriage of infante Sebastian Gabriel, widow of his first wife Maria Amalia, to infanta Cristina, younger sister of king Francisco de Asis, was an arranged one. It was not easy to find a suitable husband for Cristina, who was called "la infanta boba" because she had not a clever mind and, to add more, was very ugly. The marriage with Cristina, thirty years younger than himself, did give to Sebastian a good position into the spanish royal circle.

Their firstborn, Francisco, was protected by his cousin king Alfonso XII. The king did send the boy to the Theresianum of Vienna. Francisco was the spitting image of his mother: not handsome and, specially, not a clever man. Alfonso took the chance to arrange his marriage to a noblewoman, María del Pilar de Muguiro y Beruete. She was daughter of a count and also a wealthy heiress. It seems that, after the wedding, Pilar started a relationship with the russian Basil Zaharoff. The three daughters of Pilar were probably fathered by Basil Zaharoff, not by Francisco, who has been created duke of Marchena by the king.

Pedro de Alcántara, second son of Sebastian and Cristina, also studied at the Theresianum. It seems that he tried to find an european princess to courtship her, but unsuccesfully. So, the young man, created duke of Dúrcal by his cousin, married María de la Caridad Madan y Uriondo, sister of the marquis of Arucas. Maria de la Caridad was another wealthy heiress. And the marriage was another unhappy marriage. Pedro was dead too young: he was just thirty years old when he died. Maria de la Cariedad remarried soon.

Luis de Jesús, third son of Sebastian and Cristina, was created duke of Ansola by the queen regent María Cristina. Luís was married to a grand daughter of the dukes of Riansares, Fernando Muñoz and María Cristina; so, the wife of Luís was a daugher of a niece of queen Isabel II. The lady was named Ana Germana Bernaldo de Quirós y Muñoz, but she had a nickname: Poulot. Poulot was not a faithful wife: after the wedding, she commited adultery with Manuel Méndez de Vigo, probably the real father of her second son acknowledged by Luís. Luís was dead young, the same history of his brother Pedro de Alcántara duke of Dúrcal.

The other children, Alfonso and Gabriel, were less known that their elder brothers. Alfonso refused to became a duke and he lived a quiet life far from the court. He was still alive during the Second Republic. The younger, Gabriel, was deaf-mute and he died very young.

Hope this brief info helps...

I read that was Isabella II who arranged Sebastien-Maria Cristina marriage as she had had good relationship with Cristina and wanted to marry her to a Royal after all those alliances of Cristina's sisters to poor ambitious men.

The Infante Sebastian Gabriel de Borbon y Braganza, in 1832, married Maria Amalia of Borbone delle Due Sicilie, one of sisters of Queen of Spain Maria Cristina. But one year later, the infante took part for don Carlos against his sister-in-law and the young Isabel II. He was exiled in Napoli in 1834 who died Maria Amalia in 1857 childless. In 1859, Sebastian implored his rehabilitation. Isabel II agreed on one condition: the infante must marry  her sister-in-law, Cristina de Borbon, ugly and poor-minded person...Don Sebastien accepted the deal.
