The Kings of Saxony in XVIII-end XIX cent.
« on: January 24, 2005, 04:50:18 PM »
Queen Victoria seemed extremely taken with a younger George of Saxony (1832-1904) who married Maria Ana of Portugal. QV's descriptions of him - v. musical, v. friendly, good-humoured & v. good with children - make him sound like an absent minded professor. She calls him 'excessively absent like his father'  & again 'his absence is very great.' He seems to lose himself in music, singing & playing 'like a great artiste.'
He sounds a very interesting character all in all!

Georg & Maria Ana's children look so much like their Portuguese cousins, Carlos I & Alfonso, duke of Oporto - very fair & fat. There is definitely an air de famille I think.

fair and fat - what a nice expression.  ;)

Anyway, that sounds interesting. Do you have any pics of Carlos and Alfonso? They were the sons of Luís, King of Portugal and the Algarves - am I right?

Maximilian "Max", Prince of Saxony

Max became a priest on July 26th 1896 - against the will of his uncle King Albert. He lived in Freiburg (CH).

King Albert´s opposition to Max becoming a catholic priest was out of pure political consideration since the population of Saxony consisted almost entirely of protestants. Albert didn´t want the Royal Family to show to much of catholicism and thus irritating the protestant majority. He and his wife Queen Carola were present when Max celebrated his first holy mass as newly ordained priest. By the way Carola  converted to catholicism even before she met Albert so in the intimacy of the family they were very catholic. Max became a scholar specializing in the eastern church.

His mother was the unfortunate Infanta D. Maria Anna de Bragança.
She died when he was just 14.
His father was King George I b.1832-d. 1904.
He reigned for just 2 years after his brother king Albert died childless in 1902.

Speaking of Maximilian what did his younger brother Albrecht died of ?
He was just 25 years old.
I know he had a poor health when he was a child and it was because he got ill in 1884 that caused his mother's death as she would not leave his bedside.

Eric, this thread is about Max and his siblings - children of Maria Anna and Georg of Saxony. Maybe you read the introduction first?  ???
