Maria, absolutely. I just don't like that it is such a religious name

Actually, all the Romanov names are religious names. They were Orthodox Christians and thus every single one of them was named for a Saint. Actually Maria's patron Saint was Mary of Magdalene.

I like Alix to, it's such a simple but special name.

If the Grand Duchess Maria were born twenty years later, assuming her parents were not murdered, then maybe she would have been given a cheery non-religious Bolshevik name. I will propose a few:  Oktoberskaya (October), Revolutsia (Revolution), Krasny Zvezda (Red Star) and my favourite, Prinuditelny Trud (Hard Labour).

Darling Addison.  Time to return to your scathing theater reviews, dear one.

I was wondering if you were changing your name to one used by one of the Romanovs, what would it be?

I'd name my (future) kids after OTMA (don't like the name Alexei though :-/) only what if they're not into Russian history?

Who cares if they don't like Russian history?  They don't have to!  And if they want to change their name, they can if they want, right?

:)

I'm happy with my name, too.

I could add two names to the bad baby names list that I heard in a story fifteen or twenty years ago. A woman who gave birth to fraternal twins is said to have named them MALE (pronounced Maalay) and FEMALE (pronounced Femaalay). It is rather like naming your dog DOG, except that the animal would be unaware of the snickers and odd looks when the name is read aloud by a confounded teacher in a school class.

Oh my gosh, my old art teacher in 5th grade had that "Female" name! It was because her parents couldn't think of a name.

Glad everyone liked the link. I spent about 2 hours on it last night, so don't click if you don't have the time. ;D

Wow, now that's just sad. I would feel horrible for the kids with names like that. Can you imagine the teasing?

I really like the name Anastasia. Though I don't mind Marie (I just think it sounds kind of cute). Irina isn't too bad either.  :)
