Info about the Bobrovnikov family??
« on: February 27, 2006, 01:53:42 AM »
In my research of their genealogy, I have come across some references this family as barons or counts of imperial Russia but nothing firm. I do know that the Great grandfather, Fedor Bobrovnikov (born Feb 21, 1856 in Ryazhsk, RP, Russia), was the mayor of a town called Markovka (sp??) in what is now Ukraine but at the time was part of Imperial Russia, and was a major landowner. His father's name was Vasili Bobrovnikov (born in 1825 in Ryazhsk, RP, Russia) but we know nothing else about him. I believe that this family was nobility as there are some references in T.F. Boettger's research that refers to them as such but I can't seem to get a response from Boettger about what he knows. If anyone can help me find out any information I would appreciate it.

There is a family named Borovnikov that has been listed among the Nobility of Malorussia (Ukraine) since 1760.

Thanks for replying so fast! :-) Do you have any other information about them or do you know where I might find the info?? I am having the devil of a time doing this research and I do not speak Russian so that makes it more difficult. It sounds like this information could be relevant as the Bobrovnikov family is from the Ukraineian region of imperial Russia. I am interested in the direct patriarchal line.

I have married into this family and would like to get as complete a genealogy on them as I can. I already have my own genealogy done (took me and several members of my family working together for 18 years to get it back to the mid 1600's) so I would like to have equivalent info on my husband's family.

Is your husband related to astronomer Nikolay Bobrovnikov who immigrated to the US in 1924?

Yes. Nicholay (Nicholas) was my husband's grandfather. In my records he went by Nicholas when he got here. I have pasted below the notes from my genealogical file....
Data from birth certificate, marriage certificate, death certificate, naturalization record, Grinnell family bible, NTB book (important for this and earlier generations) which covers his life from birth until he entered the United States in 1924. Lived in Markovka 1896-1900, in Starobielsk 1900-1914, Petrograd 1914-1917, student at Petrograd Polytechnic Institute, Petrograd Institute of Technology, and Vladimir Military
School. In Russian Army July 1917-June 1918, then 4 months at Kharkov University, then Dec 1918-Feb 1920 in Denikin Army, wounded. Refugee camp in Cyprus Feb 1920-Sep 1921. Four months in Greece and Yugoslavia. Nov 1921-Sep 1924, Prague, Czechoslovakia at Charles University. 1924- 1927 at the University of Chicago and Yerkes Observatory, Williams Bay WI, Ph.D. Jun 1927. Postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley and Lick Observatory 1927-1930. Professor of Astronomy at Ohio Wesleyan and Ohio State Universities, Director Perkins Observatory. Retired in 1970 and moved to Berkeley. Short biography by Donald E. Osterbrock in Mercury, 15:46-50,63, 1986. Asteroid 2637 (A919 SB) named Bobrovnikoff in his honor, "New names of minor planets" in International Astronomical Union Minor Planets Circular July 24, 1983. "The asteroid was discovered Sept. 22, 1919 by K. Reinmuth at Heidelberg. Named in honor of Nicholas T. Bobrovnikoff, director of the Perkins Observatory from 1934 to 1951, currently preparing an authoritative history of astronomy. Perhaps best known for his pioneering investigations on the effect of aperture size on the observed total magnitude of comets, he made an exhaustive investigation of the 1909-11 apparition of Halley's Comet and prepared in manuscript form a comprehensive catalogue of physical observations of comets. His spectroscopic study showing differences in the surfaces of minor planets, published in 1929, was 'so far ahead of its time that it was overlooked'. Following suggestions by D. D. Meisel and N. Sperling, the name was proposed by B. G. Marsden, who found the identifications involving this planet."

Do you have more information on this family?? of Nicholas's father and grandfather, I only have sparse information.

Thanks for sending this!. :-) If I can get it translated it could be of some help. Unfortunately, I can not read or speak Russian but I may be able to have my choir director translate it for me... she is Russian. Can you read this site or tell me if anyone here might be able to help me with this just in case my choir director does not have time??
