Count Douglas Family

Hi!

Where do the family come from originally? And when did they move to Sweden? Which religion do they have (Catholic)? And are they rich?

The Douglas family is originally from Scotland. The first member of the family to live in Sweden was a man called Robert Douglas. He received baronial status in 1651 and the title count (greve in Swedish) three years later, in 1654.

They were probably protestants when they came to Sweden, as there was no such thing as freedom of religion in Sweden back then. The only permitted faith was the Swedish evangelical lutheran church. I do not know if all the Douglas today are still protestants. Since a few of them have married catholic royals it is possible that at least these persons have converted. I do not know much about their economical situation, but I do not think they are poor. ;)

This family is very well off in Sweden.  They have lots of business interests and are philanthropic as well.  I believe there is a Count Douglas currently involved in politics.

I know there are several members of this family who married into royalty.

Count Robert Douglas (1880-1955) m.(1939) Princess Auguste Viktoria of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, Queen of Portugal.

Can anyone think of any others?

Countess Elizabeth Douglas (*1940), daughter of Carl Ludvig Douglas and Ottora Haas-Heye, married Max Duke in Bavaria (*1937) - not a bad match! :)

and Count Carl Axel Douglas is married to one of Otto von Habsburg many daughters, Archduchess Walpurga of Austria (*1958)

Isn't her sister married to the Duke of Marlborough? (I know, not quite royalty).

Yes, her younger sister Rosita´s husband is the Duke of Marlborough - not a bad match either! ;)

Count Carl Israel Douglas married countess Louise von Langenstein und Gondelsheim, daugther of grand duke Wilhelm of Baden and Catharina Werner. Maybe not really royal, but still... :)

Also count Axel Douglas was firstly married to princess Johanna of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Hohenstein. Not really royal either, but still (again)... ;)

The great grandfather of countess Elizabeth Douglas who married duke Max in Bavaria was prince Philipp zu Eulenburg und Hertefeld, by the way. :)

2 more Countesses of Dogulas married in german Houses.
Countess Leonille Douglas married in 2006 Fürst Philipp zu Stolberg-Wernigerode and Countess Christina Douglas married Hereditary Prince Carl Christian zzu Solms-Hohensolms-Lich on 05.09.2009 in a religious ceremony.
