Didn't they have to use forceps at Olga's birth?

Yes, that's right. Hers was a difficult birth. Nicky's sister Xenia writes in her diary: "The baby is huge - weighing ten pounds - and had to be pulled out with forceps! A terrible thing to witness." I wonder why they had to pull her out with forceps. Perhaps because she had such a big head?

Actually, Anastasia was the heaviest at 11 1/2 lbs, followed by Alexei who was 11lbs.  Olga was 10lbs, Tatiana was 8 3/4lbs.

People though Olga was the heaviest because of her big head! ::) poor Olya!

Well, here's what Nicholas wrote in his diary when Maria was born:

"14 June - Peterhof
A happy day: the Lord sent us a third daughter - Maria, who was safely born at 12.10! Alix hardly slept all night, and towards morning the pains got stronger. Thank God it was all over quite quickly! My darling felt well all day and fed the baby herself. Mama arrived from Gatchina at 4 o'clock. The immediate family gathered in church for a Te Deum. Had tea with Mama; wrote telegrams and went through the unbearable papers. I only managed to get out into the fresh air after dinner - the evening was marvellous."

Always thought, that the parents didnt really happy when Maria born, because they want a boy, but after that I read that the loved her,and her nurse wrote this (dont know to who^^):

"I thought to it often, that good was born, without the smallest trace of the original sin" ^^

That quote may be by Margaret Eagar.

They used forceps on me as well, and in some instances (my case anyway) it was to birth the baby faster. Maybe something went wrong, or they felt something was about to go wrong, so they wanted it done. My heart stopped so they used the forceps. Just a theory.

Yes yes...think at that time, didnt use caesarean delivery, and if yes, they coulndt used in Alix, cause Oliska in the (grrr cant find the word) so she was in the finish, and at that time docs cant push back the baby...it's sounds scary, but if they didnt help for Alix and Oliska...the little G.D. maybe had injury, cause of the oxigenless or something like that.

It all sounds pretty ghastly.

Makes me glad for my mother's sake that I was three weeks early and a very bare six pounds!

The classic 'horrible royal birth' was, of course, the Kaiser.

I've never eead anything about the weather on any of the GDs birthdays. That's a good question, though.
Poor Alix! Imagine a baby weighing TEN pounds. I was only 3 lbs 15 ounces!
