Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh
« on: March 04, 2006, 06:27:40 AM »
I don`t know, but I didn`t found a special topic to one of ma favorite members of british royal family:
Philipp, Duke of Edinburgh!
Right, sometimes Philipps steps into the fat cell with his saying, but he is an old man and we forgive him!
What I like in the person of the Duke of Edinburgh is:
he is born as Greek Prince, with not much money and no big future! His parents gets devorced and his uncle Dickie helps him finding a place in the British Army!
When the litle Princess Elizabeth felt in love by first view to him, he used the favour of the hour!
He changed his royal greek name Filippos Prince of Greece and Danmark into Lt. Philipp Mountbatten, get married with the Princess of Wales and is today the Patriarch of the british royal family!
The name of the common british dynastie will be "Mountbatten" or Mountbatten Windsor!
Isn`t it a career?
I think, it is a big career !
But we mustn`t not forget: since around 60th years, he is loyal at the side of the queen!
Respect!

Has somebody more family photos with the young Filippos or as the British lovely call him "Phil the Greek"?

Welcome La_Rainha

There was a thread about Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, but it seems it was quite a while ago.

I am sure other members will agree, yours is such a delightful post, you deserve to begin a new one.

I am sure some of our posters with prodigious photo-libraries will produce some images of the young Prince Philip.

One or two minor corrections La Rainha - I don't think Philip's parents officially divorced (though I could be wrong here!) and Elizabeth II, his wife, was never styled Princess of Wales. Before their marriage she was HRH Princess Elizabeth, and afterwards HRH the Duchess of Edinburgh.  :)

Thank you for the nice photos!
Really, to Prince Lieven!?!?
Elizabeth never was Princess of Wales...! After thinking about, it can be true!
I took a look on old Postcards, I`m collecting and you are right, always HRH Princess Elizabeth! On old photos Elisabeth of York!
To Philipps parents...! I`m also not sure, but  they lived apart for a long time!

If you have the opportunity, read "Alice" by Hugo Vickers.  Philip was shuttled from one relative to another until he entered the Royal Navy.  He didn't see his mother very much at all during the years when she was suffering from a breakdown.

I know that he got foot-in-the-mouth-itis many times over the years, however I appreciate his sense of humor.  I have always liked him, whatever his perceived faults.  I enjoyed seeing "The Ranger" segment of the program on PBS about Windsor Castle.   He seems to be going strong, although well over 80, driving about in his Land Rover, one hand on the wheel!

He has been interviewed on many subjects, making a particularly telling comment when referring to the retirement of the Brittania.  This was the only place that was truly theirs, not having been lived in by ancestors for hundreds of years.

All that and married to The Boss too.

I always thought you could see some of William and Harry in this picture. Philip was quite the good-looking lad. Between he and Diana they brought some much needed height into the family.  :)

As to Alice & Andrew, I don't think they ever divorced.

In one of the threads, there's a good deal on Philip's childhood, I'll try to find it.

You are very welcome La Rainha. The reason Elizabeth was never Princess of Wales was that her father King George considered that the title was the exclusive right of the wife of the Princess of Wales, and that it was thought since George VI and Queen Elizabeth could in theory produce a son that would replace Elizabeth in the succession, she couldn't be made Princess of Wales.

Her titles were:
*Princess Elizabeth of York (1926-1936)
*Princess Elizabeth (1936-1947)
*Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh (1947-1952)
*Queen Elizabeth II (1952-)
