The portrayal of Prince Philip has some elements of truth to it but it is a charicature.  Prince Philip is a person who is frustrated by being in a support role.  He is fairly down to earth and does not understand the concept of political correctness.  He speaks before he filters the thoughts.  He was impoverished as a child but was born iinto priviledge.  He is not that well educated formally but has been exposed to cultural leaders.  He has become crusty with age. Most of all, he is an individual.

He is truly a daredevil that's for sure! Carriage driving at 88...oh my goodness! I've got to respect his energy level at his age.

Oh yeah, it's a wonder he didn't hurt himself. Tough old thing. Still up for having a go, good on him.

I think the French caption says to that Alice left the convent to see one of her granddaughters marry?

The only granddaughters to marry in her lifetime were

Christina of Hesse m. Kronberg 2 Aug 1956 Andrei of Yugoslavia
Margarita of Baden m.Salem (civ) 5 Jun 1957 (rel) 6 Jun 1957 Tomislav of Yugoslavia
Dorothea of Hesse at Schliersee, Upper Bavaria 31 Mar 1959 (rel) Munich 1 Apr 1959 Friedrich zu Windisch-Grätz

Happy early birthday to HRH! 89 years old tomorrow...wonder what sort of celebrations they'll have planned next year for his 90th?

That's an impressive accomplishment reaching his age. Though he and the Queen have showed signs of slowing down, they both still seem quite active and vibrant for their ages. Well done.

I remember seeing that documentary, "The Real Prince Philip", on YouTube about a year ago and was disappointed when it was removed. I found it really interesting, especially when they talked about his early life in Greece. Anyone know of anywhere online where it might be found?

That documentary was produced by Channel Four in Britain and you might contact them to find out if the DVD is available.

In biography of Prince Tomislav he recalls a meeting with Alice dressed like a nun at the wedding of his brother Andrei and Princess Christina von Hessen-Kassel and says that she met him at the stairs of the palace and said to him:"You are Tomislav and you are going to marry my granddaughter."He said:"It's not me,my brother Andrei is going to marry your granddaughter." and she replied with the smile:"Don't worry,I am going to catch you one day" and he remembered it very well...
