How unfortunate that the Duke will apparently miss the largest gatherings of royals at Sandringham in many years.  I imagine that is very upsetting to  the Queen, and to the Duke himself.  Not a man who likes a fuss, and certainly not a man who would be happy realizing that HE was the cause of concern and fuss.  God bless and hoping for a speedy recovery.

Indeed. We must not forget that the Duke is already 90 years old. HRH was fit and exercise all his life until much later in age. I shall pray for his speedy recovery tonight in church.

It was heartbreaking to hear the Queen's speech yesterday about the importance of family, filmed before the Duke's admittance into hospital. She was so sincere and it was rather upsetting because she wouldn't have known then that her husband would be taken to hospital just before Christmas. Wishing him a full recovery.

The Queen has always put family unity above all. That is why the antics of Diana & Fergie had pained her so much.

Still waving and all smiles, but it must hurt, and it's not something to
think of as routine,to the surgeons, yes, but never to a patient, and
certainly not at his sparkling age...He will have to listen to his body...
....and his family,otherwise,well,he's in no condition,or less,soon.

Just finished reading the new biography on his early years. There wasn't a whole lot of new information but it was a really well put together look at this often over-looked period of the Duke's life.

Page 67:

'For the five years after that, from the summer of 1932 until the spring of 1937, he neither saw nor heard from her [his mother] at all....'It's simply what happened' he told one biographer. 'The family broke up. My mother was ill, my sisters were married, my father was in the South of France. I just had to get on with it. You do. One does.'..When, years later, an interview asked him what language he spoke at home, his immediate retort was 'What do you mean, 'at home'?'.

Correct me if I misheard or misread, but I was under the impression that when Philip was packed off to the UK and to Gordonstoun, he spent a great deal of time with his wonderful grandmother VMH at Kensington Palace and with the Mountbattens. The "collapse" of his immediate family circle, with the sisters all marrying, his father running of to the South of France and Alice's apparent break down does all make awful reading when one considers Philip was only eleven in 1932. I admire Prince Philip though, as he never seems to blame his childhood for anything...."You just got on with it." None of this "issues" labeling, analysis and finding blame that is so popular today! I suspect that he inherited a great deal of his resilience and strength of character from his extraordinary grandmother. Philip spent quite a bit of time with her throughout the thirties and perhaps some of her indomitable spirit rubbed off on him.  Seeing an interview he did to mark his ninetieth birthday earlier this year, one can hardly blame him for being a little irascible when asked what he deems silly, inane questions or being paid compliments he sees as irrelevant and vacuous. I get the impression Philip shares many good traits with VMH and also Louise of Sweden, who was famously unstuffy and down to earth.

" None of this "issues" labeling, analysis and finding blame that is so popular today!

One should understand that there is a big difference between "blaming" and 'understanding' one's past history and the people who inhabited it..   Its a good idea to review your past and see it honestly for what it actually was.  Often people go through life without examining anything.  This can lead to endless suffering and confusion.   Better to live in reality than fantasy...past or present.
