thanks i was wondering! I was sure it must have had some sort of connection, not like the royal family to let such things slip!

I was reading a book on daily mail photos of HM and it said something about her suffering criticism for staying at home when prince charles went to hospital for an appendectomy.. does anyone know more about this? Sorry if its been mentioned elsewhere but i'd never heard of it before and was slightly taken aback...

Happy 86th birthday to Queen Elizabeth II. Interesting how many current monarchs are in their 70s and 80s.

Happy Birthday to HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

Bit of trivia:  She is the only living Head Of State to have served in uniform during World War II.

Happy Birthday to HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

Bit of trivia:  She is the only living Head Of State to have served in uniform during World War II.

To momentarily expand the "trivia" idea relative to HM Elizabeth II:  If we were to append the word "former" as to " .....living (FORMER) Head/s of State......," the picture broadens/changes a bit:  The first one that comes to mind for me, is His Majesty King Michael I of Romania, a great-great-grandson of HM Queen Victoria, by descent of both his parents and is a cousin of the  present Queen Elizabeth II.  He indeed was in uniform during WW II (his second instance as king), and in fact attended, and was recognized at the Victory Parade 2010 in Moscow as being the "only living Supreme Commander in Chief of a European State in the Second World War."
I would have to research HM King Simeon II of Bulgaria, also a kinsman of HM Queen Elizabeth II, but I believe (though legitimate Head of State and "Tsar" of Bulgaria) he was only a child during the Second World War, overseen by a Regency.
Both are indeed still living and have interesting subsequent histories.   Regards,  AP.

Simeon came to the Bulgarian throne in 1943 at the age of six, and was under the regency of his uncle, Prince Kirill, throughout his reign. Presumably he was titular commander in chief of the Bulgarian forces.
