David_Pritchard:
The Russian Empire was a contiguous empire assembled over centuries of conquest radiating out from the city of Moscow. Its colonies were neighbors for the most part: In the northwest: Ingria, Finland, Karelia, Estland, Livland, Lettland, Latgal, Kurland, Lithuania. In the west: Poland, Red Russia, White Russia, Little Russia, Bessarabia and Crimea. In the south: Ingushetia, Chechnya, Armenia, Georgia, Abkahzia, Azerbaidjan, Dagastan, Kalmikia, Osetia and others. I will not even attempt to list all of the colonial land and peoples east of Moscow as there are so many. The Russian did encroach on the Chinese Empire in the 19th century but these settlements were more like the trading enclave that other European powers had at the same time.
The only distant colony that Russia had was Alaska along with a trading fort called Fort Rossiya (now called Fort Ross) north of San Francisco. There was an attempt by the King of Hawaii to become a Russian protectorate but this offer was rejected by Emperor Aleksander I.

Another fantastic nugget of information. I had never heard that about Hawaii. Can you shed any light on the reasons for the request and/or the refusal? Thanks in advance!
Imperial.Opal:
Thanks David, for that wealth of information, did Russia try to conquer Afganistan in the 19th century. the British army campaigns also failed due to bad weather.logistics.leadership and the Afgan tribes.also the russians invaded Afganistan in 1979 till 19 ??? when they were overthrown by the Taliban and Mujjadeen fighters Regards, Opal ;)

Hawaii... Not such a big deal compared to Madagascar, over which Peter I planned to establish protectorate. The expedition was almost ready to sail when the tsar died.
