Exclusive colours of Grand Duchesses
« on: September 25, 2006, 09:45:09 AM »
Can anyone tell me the shades/colours selected by Empresses and Grand Duchesses for their court gowns.

I think Alix chose a shade of rosé, but what about all the others. I believe each one had their own exclusively for their lifetime. Am I right in thinking that after a Grand Duchess died, her colour could be selected by another Grand Duchess upon maiking her own debut?

I should be very grateful for any data

Thank you for all help :)

Theres many topics of the Empress and the grand duchesses' gowns, look under search, sweetie. :)
And in the topic of "Having fun" many of our members colored pictures of the royal ladies in the court dresses, and most are really realistic.

For the colored of the gowns, yes, i have read that each grand duchess had a color, like (i think) Grand Duchess Xenia's dress was a shade of blue with gold lining, Grand Duchess Marie Pavlovna sr's was bright orange linding with fur.

Happy to help, please just call me Mandie.  :)

I just found two funny stories what happens to those lovely and richly made gowns. It from the book "The Court of the last Tsar; Pomp, power and pageantry in the regin of Nicholas II" by one of our members- Mr. Grey King.

"Once, Grand Duke Michael Nikolaievich caught the train of Grand Duchess Vladimir (Maria Pavlovna)'s gown with his spur, which she unknowingly dragged behind her, Her Page ran forward, atempting to grab the yards of lace and velvet, but succeded only in shredding even more of the fabric as the grand duchess struggled on."

"Then at another ball, once,  Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich was waltzing with Nadine Wonlar-Larsky when he caught his spur in the hem of her gown. He tried to disentangle his foot, but as he did so, he ripped the bottom of the dress away, dragging rows of lace and satin with him. His startled partner tried to balance herself against this tug of war, but both ended up in a heap on the floor, watched by thousands of mirthful eyes."

Lol!!

Am I right in thinking Grand Duchesses only got to choose their unique personal colour for gowns after marriage or did they do so before their social debuts?

I enjoyed the stories, and I thought them quite amusing when I was reading this book a few weeks ago. I think that book has great info on court gowns- it made me very fascinated with them to have them in the book. They were lovely dresses, but it seems, uncomfortable. I tried to start a thread about them in their world and culture part of the forum, and I also bumped up some older threads about court gowns. I would appeciate if anyone would post to these threads, or at least read them. :)

Yes, those kinds of stories bring history alive, and makes it very interesting. Rather than seeing these old stiff gowns in these photos of long gone people, you see what their world was like, with a flash of colour and humanity.I have always liked those types of stories.
