Hi

I saw this book in Hatchards in Piccadilly earlier this week, it looks very interesting and a worthwhile purchase.  Lots of lovely pictures and a nice layout.  Softback cover.   It is also available on Amazon.

Kind regards.

That's great! It's very expensive buying books from OS, though.

I found the book Hidden Treasure of the Romanovs---Saving the Royal Jewels (2009 ) by William Clarke terrific. I have always thought that G. D. Maria Pavlovna (the elder) was an extremely fascinating Romanov and this book goes into a lot of detail about her life, family, and, of course, jewels.

I'm reading this at the moment.  It's really a biography of the man who saved the jewels Albert Stopford than it is a book about either Marie or her jewels specifically. In that sense the title of the book is rather misleading. I'm finding it an interesting read but if you are looking for a book either on Marie Pavlovna or her jewel collection I don't think you'll find much here...but having said that it does provide some information on Marie that you may not find elsewhere.  Photo-wise there really isn't anything rare and none of Marie's jewels are shown except the famous tiara that Queen Elizabeth wears all the time.

I just finished reading the captioned book by William Clarke----it was a fascinating story of how a great deal of jewels ''escaped'' from Russia , in particular Bertie Stoppard's saving Maria Pavlovna's (the Elder) staggering collection ---a lot of interesting details about numerous Romanovs and nobles .

TxKiev,

It is my understanding that many nobles, including Romanovs, were able to move valuables to Switzerland for safety, in hopes of retrieving them.  This is indicative of the rather large sale of "unclaimed" jewels sold at Sotheby's auction. Does the book elaborate on any of these?

Best regards,

HMB

No it doesn't. It discusses some of the sales of the recovered jewels of MP (not the latest sales, the ones after her death) but that's about it. It's more a biography of Albert Stopford than anything else.

Thank you for the regrettable news, "Eddie_uk".  Mr. Clarke was an excellent author in both "word and deed."  His research was patient, tenacious and thorough. His loss will indeed be felt.   Regards,  AP.
