Yeah, I got that feeling too... knowing her character, that's the best explanation we can have for her answer..

Naaah! I don't think she was trying to be sarcastic, or talk back, or be funny. She was just being herself. Not the daughter of the man who ruled one sixth of the globe, and a member of a very wealthy and important family.

Just herself, Anastasia Nicolaevna, a young girl who thought a lot, who was maybe a little spoiled but who somewhat understood that, in the eyes of God (if there is any) she was just another human being.

OTMAA lived simply, despite being rich, and were not snob at all. I hadn't heard this quote before, and I thank you for posting it. In my eyes, it reflects pretty well Anastasia's intelligent but simple personnality. But I think she was pure gold, me too, if only for answering the opposite.  :)

The conversation was with Dr. Botkin...
I was a bit worried that I should have put that in another thread at first, but....
:) You're welcome, Sophia, and I agree with you....she was an original, no doubts there.  I can't think of many other people who would have replied that way...
She and Maria would also play "wall tennis" (basically, tennis indoors) in their room, knocking over things as they did so.
In the "Favorite Memory of Anastasia" thread there is also a story about how she tried to use the special tonic they used on her hair on her doll's, and when the nanny told her not to waste the expensive stuff, Anastasia told her she wanted her doll's hair to be strong too, and the nanny must shut her mouth.

Sorry if this is a bit off-topic but Anastasia's quote after being told not to use the kappuka on her Vera's head was this: "My poor Vera! She has got no curls; this will make her hair grow." And she got her way. And in the conversation with Dr. Botkin it was: "Anastasia Nicholaievna, you are made of gold." To which she retorted, "Not at all, I'm made of ordinary leather."  ;)

Holly, our Anastasia expert here.  ;)
Maria and Anastasia had a phonograph and records, and they would make the music very loud and begin to dance so that their mother and her guests could hear it from below. (How many of us have done this before? haha!! :D)
Didn't her father once catch her hopping about on one foot, and when he asked why she was doing so, she said an officer on their yacht the Standart that if she hopped around on one foot, you would grow taller?

It wasn't her father that caught her hopping around the table on one foot, it was Doctor Botkin. She was hopping around a table on one foot when he found her and he asked her what she was doing to which she said(still hopping energetically), "An officer on the yacht told me that to hop around a table on one leg, helps one to grow."

I have a few for you, AnastasiaMischief:
When she was younger, one day she crawled under the table during a meeting and started acting like a dog-until her father escorted her out.
Another time she was playing hide-and-seek (with Gleb Botkin, I believe) and she put her shoes behind the curtain to make it appear as if she was hiding there, and then retreated to the top of the stairs to watch the results....
When Alix had guests, Anastasia and Maria (if I remember correctly) would put the trumpet of their gramophone up to the wall and turn it up as high as they could...
Another time she convinced everyone on board the Standart to roller-skate on deck.
And let's not forget her pelting passers-by with paper wads along with her sister on the day war was declared!
The gramophone one it seems to let Maria be less shy and more independant also showing a lot of her innerchild fun. So Nastya probably helped Maria a lot about personality

yes i agree

i think Marie being alone might be a bit shy when she was younger
but i think with her sisters, and when she grew older she grew into her self more.

she became more independent.

Most seem to think that Maria was sweet and quiet. But, really, she could be just as vivacious and bold as Anastasia. She shouted and romped and tried to get attention quite a bit! She often felt left out and unloved when she was younger and that led to behaviour that wasn't exactly sweet and shy... ;) And when she was sixteen she still had the mannerisms of a girl much younger in age due to Anastasia's constant company. Anastasia did help, but she wasn't that much more shy then Olga and Tatiana.

yes i agree.
i did hear a story

that when Olga, Tatiana, and Marie were little girls, that they were playing house

Olga and Tatiana had assigned their parts, and Marie wanted to be like the sister or somthing
but OT said that she couldn't

she stomped out of the room, and brought all the other toys, and kissed each girls on the forehead.
and said that she would be the kind Aunt who gives all her nieces gifts!

OT felt so bad...

i adore that story!
