Thomas, why does Mathildehohe bear her name? I guess she is buried there. bUt who came up with  the idea of giving her name to this place?

by the way, mathildehohe is a beautiful and to some extent a unique place because the Hessians manage to create a combination of the royal cemetary and a beautiful park. I have to admit that I love visiting cemetaries, especially the old ones, because while walking through the cemetary one get obtain a lot of historical information that you can`t find in books. Also, the way that people buried the members of their families, inscriptions on graves or monuments reflect people`s way of life, their attitude twards life and death etc.
as for matildehohe, the fact that a beautiful garden is so close to the cemetary does not seem to discourage numerous visitors. I love sitting and reading in the garden which is abslutely stunning!!!!! the arrangement of plants and flowers creates a wonderful picture!

You mean Rosenhöhe -
Mathildenhöhe is more western. Originally there was a wine yard which was created in an English style park in about 1800. When the Hereditary Grand Duke was married to Mathilde of Bavaria they were presented with that very park whose name was changed in honor of the bride from Busenberg into Mathildenhöhe

I mixed up the two but I`ve been to Mathidenhohe, too, of course :).actually love-struck husbans often named palaces or places in honor of their wives e.g.  Peter I named the Kadriorg palace in Tallinn in honor  of his wife Catherine Alexeevna.

There is also a Mathildenplatz (square) in Darmstadt.
However, against ones expectation, there is no memorial to Mathilde there.
Like the memorial on the Luisenplatz is for Ludewig and the memorial on the Ludwigsplatz is for Bismarck.

I think the 'Heiners' find this amusing.

Mathilde is buried in the church of St. Ludwig at Darmstadt.

I guess that Mathildenhöhe was named after Mathilde, because she was the hereditary princess of Hesse and it was quite common to give a special place the name of a member of the ruling family. In 1830 a nice little park at a small hill in the south of the Stadtschloss (castle) was named after Mathilde.

Did you know that Mathildenterrasse at Mainz bears her name, too?
Ich aber breite trauernd aus
die weiten weissen Schwingen,
Und kehr' ins Feenreich nach Haus -
Nichts soll mich wieder bringen.
