Mathilde von Bayern, Grand Duchess of Hesse-Darmstadt
« on: April 30, 2006, 08:02:55 AM »
Mathilde Caroline Friederike Wilhelmine Charlotte Princess of Bavaria was born on August 30th 1813 in Augsburg and died on May 25th 1862 in Darmstadt. She was the eldest daughter of Ludwig I. of Bavaria (1786-1868) and his wife Therese Princess of Saxe-Hildburghausen (1792-1854).
Mathilde married Ludwig III. Grand Duke of Hesse and the Rhine (1806-1877) on December 26th 1833 in Munich.

I'd like to learn more about Princess Mathilde. Does anybody have pictures?

The St. Ludwigskirche is a catholic church, the first catholic church in Darmstadt who was built after the reformation. It was built 1822 - 1827 by Georg Moller. In 1944 it was destroyed and in the last year the renovation was finished. Now it is a church with  an own charisma.

Thank you so much for mentioning, Linnechen.  ;)

Paola told me about this book but she couldn't remember its author and exact title. I've just ordered a copy and I'm really happy about it.  :)

Mathilde and most of her siblings had really nice nicknames ...  ;)

Princess Mathilde - Thilde / Thildchen
Prince Luitpold - Poldi / Polderl
Princess Adelgunde - Duni
Princess Hildegard - Hildchen
Princess Alexandra - Zandi
Prince Adalbert - Berti

Oh, some of these nicknames sounds like good old Bavarian ones - but some are rather "Prussian" like e.g. Tildchen. ;)

Thomas_Hesse, unfortunately I can't see the picture. Would you be so kind and post it again'? Thanks.

What was she famous for? What was she like as   a landsmutter?

She was an exception in the long history of the Hesse-Darmstadt Royal family in that she was a) the only catholic "First Lady" in the lineage and b) remained childless.
She was greatly loved and especially embraced the catholic perish.
Darmstadt's most famous cultural heritage bears her name: Mathildenhöhe

Thomas, why does Mathildehohe bear her name? I guess she is buried there. bUt who came up with  the idea of giving her name to this place?

by the way, mathildehohe is a beautiful and to some extent a unique place because the Hessians manage to create a combination of the royal cemetary and a beautiful park. I have to admit that I love visiting cemetaries, especially the old ones, because while walking through the cemetary one get obtain a lot of historical information that you can`t find in books. Also, the way that people buried the members of their families, inscriptions on graves or monuments reflect people`s way of life, their attitude twards life and death etc.
as for matildehohe, the fact that a beautiful garden is so close to the cemetary does not seem to discourage numerous visitors. I love sitting and reading in the garden which is abslutely stunning!!!!! the arrangement of plants and flowers creates a wonderful picture!
