The Likani Palace
« on: May 08, 2006, 03:22:16 PM »
I have just been re-reading Simon Montefiore's book: Stalin, At the Court of the Red Tsar. In it are several rarely seen photos of dachas used by Stalin on his holidays.
One was the Likani Palace, which the caption indicated was the home of Grand Duke Michael. It was one of Stalin's favorite resorts.
I believe it is now in the Republic of Georgia.
I would be interested if any readers have any detailed information about this Romanov palace--- when was it built, who used it, what is it's present state and condition, etc.
Thanks. :-?

The Likani Palace is part of the mountain resort Borjomi. It was designed by L. Benois and built in 1892-1895 by L. Bielfeld. The palace has never ceased to be used as a governmental residence (currently by the president of Georgia) and is therefore well preserved and kept.

Thank you, Mike, for the very nice photo of the villa, and for the information.
The book only refers to Grand Duke Michael and doesn't specify which one. Since the villa was built only in 1897 then it might have been for Nicholas II's brother, then again, maybe not. I don't recall reading that Nicholas and his family ever visited that part of the empire so I doubt his family ever lived in the house.

Borjomi GD Mikhail Nikolaevich's Romanov, son of Tsar Nicholas I, built this summer residence here in
1871 in the style of a Tuscan Villa

Is this the palace where the Viceroy of Caucasus Mikhail Nikolaevich used to spend holidaywith his family? Is it true that it burned and now doesn't exist anymore?

To me, it has some similarities to Abbas Tumani, hasn't it?

Is Abbas Tumani far from Borzhomi?

Gleb,
This has more than similitaries, the picture quoted above is incorrectly labeled.  It is a picture of Abbas Tumani, Grand Duke Georgi Alexandrovitch's palace.

The Palace of GD MN had been destroyed in 1968 year, the preserved Likani Palace (in my post above) is the palace of GD Nikolai Mikhailovitch.
