I think it was during the Bordino (is that the right word?) event in 1912.

I think you're right. I have other photos from that day, labeled as 1912. It's very likely they were taken during the centennial celebration of the Russian victory over Napoleon at Borodino on September 7, 1812. (Incidentally, that's why Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture has canon fire in it  ;))

I have returned the book to the library, but I believe it was called Last Tzar by Yarlissa Yerminova, or something like that. I'm sure I butchered her name...
