I saw this film again recently & thought it was wonderful! Not being a Rasputin fan, I was still very much touched by the way in which he was portrayed as struggling with the responsibility that he seemed suddenly to acquire. I wasn't sure about the way Alix seemed to turn on him. The only bit I didn't like at all was the pathetic scream as Ella was pushed down the mine. Now, when I think of Rasputin I think of Alan Rickman.

 ???
But the film didn't suggest the Tsaritsa actually had an affair with Rasputin.

I haven't yet seen a film that says Alexandra went to Rasputin for anything more than (1) assistance with Alexei's condition and (2) spiritual counseling.

Apart from Greta Scacchi's the portrayal of Alexandra I quite liked the film.

Silja you're so right.

This film was recently shown on BBC2 so I watched it again, tho' having it on dvd.  When seeing it for the first time I thought Alan Rickman playing a bit too exaggerated, his russian accent (also from other actors) annoyed me. But watching the film a few times now I must say Rickman did a good job.
For Ian Mckellen it looked like a routine job- his lines weren't that interesting-yes he had the looks- he played much better parts on stage and other films. Anyone seen his Priest of Love as D.H. Lawrence-superb!
Gretta Scacci wasn't on her best playing Alexandra in my opinion.

Talking about actors who played Rasputin: I thought the Rasputin in Fall of Eagles played by Michael Aldridge, really hilarious. The part wasn't that big, but the heavenly look on his face and the way he walked, made me burst into laughter.

Yeah, but i thought Greta didn't very much look like Alix, but they had the same 'fretfullness' to them! When Greta was  like, flustrd in the movie she looked a lot like the real alix.

P.s-where did you get this on dvd? I only have a vhs one, and i didnt lknoww a dvd one was avaible! :o

I got the dvd from a Dutch bookstore, its region 2 and you need region 1 , sorry couldn't find that. It's available on Amazon but only on vhs for USA.
Maybe other members know if there's a R1 dvd version.

This is the film that first got me interested in the Romanovs. The film isn't good if you're looking for accuracy, but also remember all of the other poor attempts at making a film about the IF. Yes?

I would say that this one is THE best I've seen so far. Acting wise, Alan Rickman does a beautiful job at portraying the mad monk. I've tried to pick out certain little details about the film and one of the most obvious to me was the eye motif. There was always a key light on his eyes in several scenes as sort of a "tip of the hat" to the idea that Rasputin had these piercing eyes that just burned right through you.

It's difficult for us, as we fancy ourselves guardians of this history, to see a film about the Romanovs. We can just pick these films apart knowing the true historical context. It's painful!

I give the filmmakers their props. As a work of art, I think it's brilliant. The film may not be accurate, as we know, but it sure looks damn good!

It's merely a taste of the real thing.

I loved this movie.  Ian McKellan was a very convincing Nicholas and I thought Alan Rickman made a wonderful Rasputin.  I liked the sympathetic portrayal of Rasputin's character, instead of the usual over the top Holy Devil.

It wasn't accurate historically, but I liked how the characters of the historical figures were portrayed.  Especially Alexei.  He was so real.

I was really glad I was able to get this VHS on Ebay, as it out of print everywhere.

I hate the concept of "out of print." Frustrating, really. It seems like eveything I like or want is out of print.

I took my friend's copy of Rasputin to a video copy store and got it copied for about $13. The quality isn't as good as the original tape, but it's better than nothing at all.

"OUT OF PRINT." It's so upsetting!

I think that's why God created Ebay and used book stores... :)

Hi all as said in the Nicholas forum.  This is link to pictures of young actor Freddie Finlay who played a great Alexei in the Film Rasputin.  The most great detailed movie of our favourite family.  The last picture is of when the family is executed. Alexei is reaching for the Tsarina.

Here is the link.

Was that the same movie where Alan Rickman played Rasputin?
