And yet the depictions of Alexandra and Anna Viroubova in this film are highly inaccurate. Besides, the actresses in no way resemble the real persons. I wasn't much impressed with this film. Despite it being banned then  it's very much a Soviet film.

Are you referring to Rasputin, or Agony ???

I think Silja is referring to 'Agony' - that was the impression I got too. I especially hated them having Alexandra using lines such as 'I hate this country".

Does anyone know who the lady having the affair with Rasputin was?

The name of the lady was Princess Marisa --- a fictitious character played by the actress Sheila Ruskin ---. It wasn't exactly what I should call an affair, more an act of penance, as Rasputin would say.
The scene was merely to show what impact he had on highborn ladies, in fact on women.

Amazon has four copies of the VHS tape  Rasputin

They begin around $35 US and go up.  They are all used video store copies.  But IMHO I doubt that it was rented much here in the states, so the copies should be in pretty good condition.  At least the sellers say they are.

I was temped to buy it, but am not sure it is worth the price since you all have such split opinions on it and you have actually seen it.

By the way, Amazon has a disclaimer saying it will not sell this video to anyone under the age of 18.  Must be rate "R"?

I watched this again recently. I still like it.  :)

Here's what the film portrays particularly well, IMO:
1. the tenderness between Nicky & Alix
2. the connection between Aleksei & Alix
3. Rasputin's erratic, yet captivating way of speaking
4. Rasputin's influence on public opinion
5. the execution of the Romanovs

Thanks for the input Alixz, but reading about him has been enough for me. Seeing a movie about him would not make me feel more of gain to his side, or person. Ugh what a person. I could not and would not pay to see anything more about him !

Just rented this movie ... and it was OK. It starts when Aleksei is talking and these men are recovering the bones of the Romanovs in the forest. Then it goes to when Rasputin is a young boy and then 20 years later when he's going to St. Petersburg to heal the ill, young Tsarevich.

It finishes when the Romanovs get executed by the soldiers and it's very sad because it's in slow motion and this sad music plays. Then writing comes up on the screen about the re-burial of the Imperial Family, and how two bodies remain unaccounted for.

My favourite scene is when Nicholas and Alexandra are fooling around by talking about the happy times they had together. However, the scene goes further but the shot breaks away quickly.

I recommend you watch it.

These are the only pictures I can find of the movie.  I will see if I can find more.
