I agree. She looks beautiful in that picture.  Maybe she wasn't Bertie's "type".  I was trying to figure out who the Saxe-Weimar girls were, and I came up with Marie Alexandrine
(1849-1922) who married Prince Heinrich VII of Reuss, and Pauline (1852-1904) who married Carl August of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenbach.

Pauline of Saxe-Weimar:

Poor Marie of Altenburg.  Of course she was always with her mother, she was unmarried and living in the 1800's, and her mother probably advised her on her dresses!  It seems that she could change her wardrobe and moving to England would effect a separation from her "awful mother".  I wonder if they were considering Marie of Saxe-Altenburg (1845-1930) who married Prince Karl of Schwarzburg-Sonderhausen?

I thought it would maybe interesting to collect here photos taken of the guests at the occasion of King Edward's coronation in 1902. I've seen  pics of Queen Alexandra, the Duchess of Albany, the Duchess of Connaught with Margaret and Patricia, Princess Beatrice with Ena and Princess Frederica of Hannover.
Maybe some of you have pics of the Wales sisters, Princesses Thora and Marie Louise with their mother, or Princess Louise (Duchess of Argyll) ????

The Victoria and Albert Museum has a number of images from the Lafayette studios available at:
http://www.vam.ac.uk/vastatic/microsites/1158_lafayette/categories.php?category=royalty&&page_number= .

These images are portraits, including those from a number of important occasions such as the 1897 Devonshire House ball, weddings, and, hopefully, the coronation. They did have numerous images from the coronation, but they have reduced the scale of their exhibition and it looks like many 1902 coronation photos are no longer available. Some of the images they had posted are at AllPosters.com, but they also don't seem to have coronation images.

I'll dig through my files and post those that are no longer displayed by the Victoria and Albert Museum. Please understand they will be removed if the Victoria and Albert Museum tells me to remove them!

The Victoria and Albert Museum requested that the images from Lafayette studio photographs be removed so they were removed.

Shame on them ! These historical national images should be available to all, freely.

I recently discovered that Edward VII made a trip to Chicago IL (before he was king) specifically to visit an estate about 100 miles to the southwest of the city. His desire was to see the large working farms of the midwest and do some deer hunting.

Were such ventures commonplace for royals of the late 19th century?

He was involved in some aspect or other in the organization of Chicago's World Fair in 1893.  I don't recall reading of him visiting the US after his first tour of the 1860's though.

That's interesting HK.  Do you know exactly where 100 miles SW of Chicago?

I recall reading a bit ago about Louis Philippe spending several years in the US.  He traveled the frontier at one time, it made for some interesting adventures.  IIRC Grand Duke Alexis, brother of Alexander III also visited Chicago and the west.

Yes, the site Edward visited was a large farm estate in Dwight, Illinois. At the time, Dwight was definitly in the "hinterlands", but apparently he wanted to see and experience rural America at its best. His host was the Oughton family who was involved in Illinois politics and one family member actually founded the Boy Scouts.

Monarchs seem to have a bent toward experiencing Illinois agriculture at work. In the mid 1970s, Hirohito reguested a tour of the same region. His entourage traveled by motorcade down what was then Route 66 to the fertile plains of central Illinois.

The following quote comes from the book Louisa, Lady in waiting by Elizabeth Longford and is about the coronation of 1902.
A note: Louisa, Countess Antrim, was lady-in-waiting to Queen Victoria from 1891 to her death in 1901 and she served Queen Alexandra in the same function later on.

"Louisa's only sharp criticism was reserved for the so-called 'loose-box'. The Princesses were seated in the chancel, looking 'extremely well' with all their crowns on the edge of the box in front of them. "Just over them", continued Louisa, "was the 'loose-box'- & well named it was-to me the one discordant note in the Abbey-for to see the row of lady friends in full magnificence did rather put my teeth on edge- La Favorita (Mrs. Keppel) of course in the best place, Mrs. Ronny Greville, Lady Sarah Wilson, Feo Sturt, Mrs. Arthur Paget & that ilk..."

As if it was only his youth that was debauched!  Not particularly good research here and an English newspaper too, albeit the Daily Mail.
