Napoleonic Time´s Ladies
« on: June 10, 2006, 05:50:47 AM »
As I have seen that the threads on the two wives and the three sisters of Napoleon are delightful threads, fulfilled with wonderful portraits and curious information, I´am thinking that some of us could enjoy ourselves with a vaste thread about the ladies who gave splendor to the First Empire...

I had done my own selection, but I suppose that there are so more fascinating women at this time to add here!

To start this, two selectioned portraits of the two empress Josephine and Marie Louise:

Josephine

(She could be called the Lady of the Roses...due to the fact that she had at her home at Malmaison a garden with 250 varieties of these flowers!)

Marie Louise

And three chosed portraits of the three sisters, Elisa, Pauline and Caroline:

Pauline

Caroline

Another women related to Napoleon

Letizia Ramolino Bonaparte, Madame Mère

Julie Clary, wife of Joseph, elder brother of Napoleon

Christine Boyer, beloved wife of Lucien Bonaparte

(The illiterate and unsophisticated sister of an innkeeper was rejected for the Bonaparte´s family, because all of them thought she was not a suitable bride for the brother of an emperor. Only Madame Mère, a woman with a good common sense, respected the choice of Lucien).

Elizabeth "Betsy" Patterson, the first wife of Jerome Bonaparte

(If Christine Boyer was not good enough...imagine what they thought about Betsy Patterson! She was a rich heir and a belle of Baltimore, but Napoleon forced his brother to break up the marriage and Betsy returned from France to America with her little son).

(Wife of a junior officer, she was known among the troops as the "Napoleon´s Cleopatra").

Napoleon adopted as his daughters his step-daughter Hortense of Beauharnais, forced to marry the emperor´s brother Louis, and a second cousin of Hortense, Stephanie of Beauharnais:

Gogm, you have send very nice pictures. But I would have a little question concerning the first one with the headline "Charlotte". I am not really sure , who this shall be.
Maybe it´s a stupid question, but is this one of Napoleon´s nieces or somebody totally different??
Napoleon I. had two nieces with the name Charlotte, one was the daughter of his brother Joseph and Julie Clary, she was a painter, and the second one was the daughter of Lucien and Christine Boyer,  married to Prince Gabrielli. Is this picture one of these???

I checked my file and discovered the names were indeed in error.

Thank you for the peer review. This is a sign of a first class operation.

I located some verifiable Charlotte Bonaparte pictures, all from the 1820s and 30s.

A self portrait from 1834:

To verify: http://www2.comune.roma.it/museonapoleonico/fr/famiglia.htm

Zeniade to right and Charlotte to left from 1821:

To verify: http://www.getty.edu/art/gettyguide/artObjectDetails?artobj=923

Charlotte from 1824:

To verify: http://www.philaathenaeum.org/bonaparte/page2.html

Charlotte from 1831:

To verify: http://www2.comune.roma.it/museonapoleonico/fr/visita/sala9.htm.

I really must apologize for the error. That is not my normal style.

I'm running down the mystery Charlotte in a white empire dress. The Princess Charlotte pictures have been renamed to avoid future confusion.

The Réunion des Musées Nationaux specify the white charlotte is:
"Granger Jean-Pierre (1779-1840)

This is the only Charlotte Bonaparte listed in the RdMN site. FYI, I could not find a Zenaide (or Zinaide) Bonaparte there. If you search "Bonaparte," you will find a great deal.
