I have uploaded an album with photographs of Empress Sisi, family and Court related.
All carte de visite photographs including Franz Joseph, their children, brothers of Emperor Franz Joseph etc. etc.
Excuse me for the somewhat light scans - the originals are better.
Please follow the link to start with the intro and run through the album.
An index will follow....

Nice portrait of him. It reminds me one painting by Albrecht Adam.

Attention:  "Katenka Fyodrovna " and your Reply # 72 ( "its not a hat its a helmet" ) on this topic (01/21/2010) in reference to iReply #70 .  Please refer to the 3rd illustration of  Reply  #77, EMPEROR FRANZ JOSEPH by "Princess Susan," dated 01/22/10, and you will see an earlier painting of the standing Emperor with the very same-styled HAT, not a "helmet."   The hat we are speaking of is a large two broad-pointed "fore and aft" military hat per se, heavily braided and plumed.  No chin strap is evident, if it were a helmet (but I am also aware that some "soft" military hats/caps had chin straps as well).  In THIS case, it's an ornate dress hat.  Regards,  AP

The headdress in Reply 70 looks to me like a 'cocked hat' - i.e. a two-pointed hat worn fore and aft. There are plumed versions (nowadays worn by the few British colonial governors we still have), and unplumed versions (which used to be worn with Royal Navy full dress).

In the recent set of pictures, what is the ceremony in the topmost picture?

It looks like he is washing the feet of beggars - the Easter 'Maundy' rite where the sovereign mirrored the action of Jesus who washed his disciples' feet.  It certainly continued in Spain up to the 20th century I believe and the British remnamt of this lies in the 'Maundy money' where the Queen distributes special coins to deserving older people - not beggars but people who have been of service to the community etc.  I note the people being washed certainly look old, so perhaps the 'senior citizen' was replacing the beggar by this stage in Austria as well.

Looking the picturer clearse it seems you re right. About the confusion, there are helmets like that called "picklelhauben" and its easy to confuse

Ex

Here another who looks like the one of Franz Joseph

From

For some who wants to learn about that kind of helmets

BTW just and advice, it would be great if you use the "Quote" option to make clear your observations ;-)

Other thing, Princess Susan, the second you posted of FJ was colorized (awfully) for me. Thanks for remember ^^
