Photo of Draga's first husband Colonel Svetozar Mashin:

Thank you very much for photo of Svetozar Masin.

I found information, that Draga buried him in Karaul in Petrovac na Mlavi.

Do you know why he was buried here?

For me is very difficult to read text in internet in Serbian.

I am trying to find how first name of father (doctor) of Svetozar Masin was.
Is somebody, please, who can help me?

Thanks

Eliana

I think this the only forum where it is possible to find the photo of Svetozár Mašín (this should be correct Czech version of his name, I am sure with surname, but I am not sure with given name, given name also should be Světozár).
I am from Mašín family in Czech republic. I know that some Mašíns moved to USA. I have found some of them, contacted them and they asked me what we (European part of Mašín family) know about Draga Mašín. They told me that she is our relative and that she wanted to visit her relatives in Czechia but there were some reasons why she did not visit them. I asked some relatives here what they knows about Mašíns in Serbia and if they ever heard the name Draga Mašín, but it seems that Czech part of Mašín family knows nothing about them.
I would like to find information about Svetozar and Aleksandar Mašín too, but at first I need to find at least the date and place of birth of one of them.

I am impressed that somebody other looks for information about Mašíns in Serbia. I wonder why?

Stanislav

I am from Masin family too...
My great-great-grandmother was sister of Svetozar.
I very much wish to correspond with you.
I live in Moscow.

I tried to send you a private message, but it looks like it does not work for me. And I don't know why. Do you know your great-great-grandmother's name and name of her father. Her father's name and date of birth can help a lot to find more information about them. If you want to write an email to me, please contact me via page http://www.benetice.eu/v001/page.php?lang=en&proj=benetice&page=contactus , in English.

FOTR, p. 11 :

’And the beginning of the twentieth century was marked with another act of brutality: in 1903, King Alexander and Queen Draga of Serbia were massacred in a conspiracy carried out with the knowledge of Russian officials, their bodies defiled and dumped naked into the square in front of their palace.

With the exception of the Serbian King and Queen, however, there is a substantial difference between the execution of Nicholas II and those of his fellow monarchs.’

The few translated articles from Russian newspapers in 1903:

Assassination of Serbian king and the revolution in Serbia

Terrible news come from Belgrade. Last night the party of revolutionaries was in the palace and demanded that the King that he had abdicated in favor of Peter Karageorgievich. After the refusal of King, gunned down Colonel Naumovich, asked to sign a letter of denial, revolutionaries brutally murdered King Alexander, Queen Draga, Nikodie Lunevitsa her brother and her two sisters.
(sisters were not killed)

By tragedy in Belgrade

Yesterday, in Moscow, there were conversations about the terrible tragedy that has entered into the sad history of the dynasty Obrenović - this outrageous crime, the victims who fell out of the last Obrenovic and his wife.
(.....)

And all these indignant yesterday and everywhere. The terrible news of the regicide hit all struck their freezing capita detail, an abundance of so brutally, so cruelly spilled blood. .....

The state of the Royal couple

The Belgrade correspondent of "Neue Freie Presse" of a good source to found out news that Queen Draga has left 11 million. fr. stored in the Bank of England are rumors. In fact, for a three-year stay at the royal throne Draga saved the entire 900 000 francs. The condition of King Alexander - slight. Real estate Obrenović even if Milan had been burdened by debts and a greater part in the Russian Volga-Kama bank. In Konak after the murder had been found 80 thousand francs. cash.

Gramophone Company requested the Queen Natalie for permission to allow the sale of the plate, which captures the voices of King Alexander and Queen Draga recorded two months before their death.

(after demonstrations in March of 1903, I assume)

Good link -- after an auction in the end of 1904 - most of the things were probably stolen from Konak, including Draga's wedding dress, and sold on auction. I believe, among them is this Queen Draga's order of Mercy (Cyrillic 'D' is engraved), kept in England, and this medal of Royal Couple.

(from TV drama, The End of the Obrenovic dynasty, released in 1995, Alexander's and Draga's wedding, July 23rd 1900)

One dialogue from the drama (cca. 1902).

Alexander: Draga, give to me divorcement...
Draga: Sasha, are you serious?
Alexander: Serbia needs sacrifices from us, you can't give birth, it is obvious, and after proclaiming your younger brother Nikoldije to be the Heir to the Throne....
Draga: Never! I won't go pleasingly from you. You only can violently force me
Alexander: Then you want our deaths!
Draga: Better death with you, than life without you. (Literally - better to die with you, than to live without you)

I agree . They paid their forbidden love with deaths, like Crown Prince Rudolf and his mistress Mary had done before too. But to find excat kind of love is so hard, and it is sometimes so painful. But love in the end always wins, as the saying went by - 'Draga's and Alexander's love remained to be presented in this world even after their deaths'.

Today we mark 107 years since terrible assassinations/murders of Serbian King Alexander I Obrenovich, Queen Draga (Mashin), Queen's brothers, Nikola and Nikodije, several ministers and officers during ' The May Coup d' etat/ May's uprising' in 1903.

At 3. 50 a.m. when she saw that bullets were going towards Alexander, she tried for the last time - to protect her love. She stood before him, even she had been previously wounded in her arm. King died immediately, and then she cried for help and went on the balcon saying probbaly last words -- 'Officers, they killed your own King!'. And then she fell. She was alive even after fourtieth shot. Whole Europe was shocked by this brutal act.

Of course, there are so many rumors told in all those long years that passed by since 1903 - about her 'false' pregnancies, about bad reign and so on. In February of 2010, Draga's finally got monument in her hometown, Upper Milanovac.

Courtesy to the Serbian Forum - caption says 'King and Queen during the opening of the exhibition of sculptor George Jovanovich (turned back)  at 'Crown'.'

It is interesting that George, son of their successor Petar married Radmila Radonjic,a cousin of the sculptor whose exhibition Alexander and Draga attended...

I think this the only forum where it is possible to find the photo of Svetozár Mašín (this should be correct Czech version of his name, I am sure with surname, but I am not sure with given name, given name also should be Světozár).
