Sympathy for the Devil
« on: June 27, 2006, 08:36:15 PM »
Okay, way out there! ;D  I was listening to The Rolling Stones' Forty Licks album, when the track slid on over to this lovely little ditty, Mr. Jagger sang a few notes that I had never taken notice to before, and it kinda creeped me out.

But whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game
I stuck around st. petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain

The rest of the song is great, a real eye-opener about the times then and up until '68.  But that whole part made me freeze :-/

Hi!

Oh. Wow. I can't say I know the Rolling Stones really well, but this is weird, no? Somebody refering to the Romanov family in one of their songs years after 1918.

It reminds me of something I read on another website not so long ago. I mean, if something happened a century ago, do we need to old a grudge against the perpetrators for so long? Of course, no one shall forget what happened, because we don't want this to happen again, but...

Sigh. It seems that the killing of innocent people has always happened. Not because we're especially bad. Because we're human, and therefore ables of great things, in the good or bad ways. It's the fact that some people are mean that makes me appreciate the kindness of others.

Here is the sentence I read: I will love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness for it shows me the stars. It resumes very well what I'm trying to say.

Sorry if this sounds useless to some of you. Sometimes, I just go philosophing like that for hours, like, in the bus... :)

It's a great song, basically about how evil (the devil) was there for all horrible things that have happened throughout history. Besides the evils of Bolshevism it also mentions when Pilate washed his hands of Christ and when John and Robert Kennedy were assassinated, among other things. The song was recently named one of the 50 greatest conservative rock songs of all time. There is an interesting article talking about the meaning of the song and Jagger's influence here: http://dir.salon.com/story/ent/masterpiece/2002/01/14/sympathy/index.html.

Anastasia screamed in vain

When I first heard that, I thought it said "Anastasia was a babe."  I couldn't help but laugh!
