The Guns of August by Barbara Tuchman

I didn't know where else to put this, besides the Having Fun section :P

But there are some interesting chapters regarding the Eastern Front as well as the dpilomatic issues in the early 1910's.  What captured me off the bat was the first chapter...the imperial funeral in London :o  The sheer connection of the royal families.

I love this book.  I received it as a gift many years ago and it started my history obsession.

In 1964, a documentary movie was made, based on the book, well made with footage from W.W.I   ;)

Tuchman is an amazing historian.  Her research and the denseness of her writing, are, I think, unmatched.  One of the greats.

It was on my freshman college reading list. Great, engrossing book.

The Guns of August has always been on my "to read" list.  I've just never gotten around to it.  I read her other massive saga, A Distant Mirror, for the first time in college history, and it has been one of my favorites ever since, I've reread it several times over the years.  It is a fabulous book.

Now I've got to get on the ball and find myself a copy of "Guns of August".  It sounds like it might make for good winter reading....
