Gostiny Dvor

helenazar:
Gostiny Dvor in Pushkin is a smaller version of its namesake in St Petersburg. It is a short walk from the Alexander Palace, on Moskovskaya and Oranzhereinaya Streets. It is the Russian version of a strip mall, where individual stores occupy separate sections of the building, and an outdoor farmer’s market inside its large courtyard.

Gostiny Dvor as it looked at the turn of the 20th century and as it appears today:

At first glance, Gostiny Dvor looks sort of abandoned - with a strong need of renovation, but turns out that even the shabbiest storefronts are occupied and open for business. Electronics, clothing, toys, gifts are available at individual stores at Gostiny Dvor. There is even a box office, where one can buy tickets to shows in St Petersburg.

Entrance to the Tsarskoe Selo Market (in the courtyard of Gostiny Dvor), and inside the market:

The market is open 7 days a week, until 9pm. It is very popular among the locals. There, one can buy everything from watermelons to shoes...

Helen, thank you SO much! This was something I didn't think to investigate when our tour visited Pushkin for a very short time back in 1991.

You're welcome. I am not sure if Gostiny Dvor was functional in 1991, it may not have been.... It looks like at some point it was  abandoned.

Actually it was always operational. Gostiny Dvor, considered by locals as central supermarket for many years. Farmers market inside of Gostiny Dvor also, one of the central points for fresh produce.

I see, thanks. So the same thing was there during the Soviet era?

Because of the way the building looks, I got the impression that it may not have been used for some time until recently, and that they didn't have the chance to fix it up yet, but I guess it just hasn't been maintained well for years....

Yes, the farmer's market inside is excellent, you can get almost any kind of produce, and because the turnover is high, it pretty fresh.
