The "Red Room"?
« on: August 04, 2006, 10:34:54 AM »
Sorry if this has been discussed somewhere already. Does anyone know if there was a room at the Alexander Palace that was referred to as 'Krasnaya Komnata" - the "Red Room"? And if so, any info about it would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Also, if any pictures of it survived and someone can post them, that would be great.

In the thread on the Alexander Palace floorplans and the room identification, Vladimir V has identified the "Red Dining Room." although elsewhere in the same thread it is refered to as the "Crimson Sitting Room."
I do not know if the orignal Russian description matches yours or not (i.e. 'Krasnaya Komnata").
Maybe Vladimir can help.

The thread is here: http://forum.alexanderpalace.org/index.php/topic,4716.135.html

Do you mean the Crimson Reception room of the grand duchesses?

It's #7 on this plan:

Here are the only two photos I have of the Crimson Room:

ps: Looks like Bob & I were posting at the same time. These photos are of the same room he mentioned. :)

Thanks Bob, it sounds like it may be it. Maybe Vladimir V can confirm if they referred to it in Russian as "Krasnaya Komnata"? Unfortunately your link to the thread didn't come through, can you post it again? Thanks!

Yes, I think this must be it, I guess they translated it as "Crimson Room". Thanks for the photos, Sarushka!

It is indeed Alice of Hesse and the Rhine. As to why she kept it in there is somewhat of a mystery to me.

Because she is the girls' grandmother, perhaps?

I can add only that the Crimson Reception Room – the first floor and
the Red Dining Room – the ground floor.

So they are two different rooms.... the Crimson Reception Room being upstairs, where the children lived. Do you know which one was referred to as "Krasnaya Komnata"? Thanks.

There were several rooms called "Red" in the palace over time.  In the reign of Nicholas II if you said Red Room they would have assumed you meant the girl's room on the second floor.  It received its name from the fabric covering the walls and furniture.  There was a huge play-pen here.  Lili Dehn stayed here during the revolution.  Yes, the portrait of Alice was there.  I'll look it up and tell you about it later.
