Painting of the slaughter of the Swiss Soldiers....if they had only had any kind of support...more of the blood bath of this date! http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:French_Revolution-1792-8-10.jpg

Thanks, Mari, for the posting of that famous painting, I like the powerful portrayal of the attack on the Tuileries, do you know the name of the artist, when it was painted and the  Museum or art gallery where it is kept

It seems that different segments of the Artist  Bertaux show the Siege.  I cannot positively identify this as his but I think so! If anyone can verify or not  I would appreciate your input. Here is the engraving again with the information given:  http://chnm.gmu.edu/revolution/d/80/... and below from another source.
The above  hand tinted engraving engraving is titled "Siege of the Tuileries" he attack on the Tuileries, 10 August 1792. Painting by Jacques Bertaux. Musée national du château de Versailles.

Very interesting....are these from a book? And are they all from the Second Empire?  I noticed that one of the labeled illustrations used that as a date. The damage to the Vestibule was really quite extensive I see. :o

Hi there, Yes the images are from 2 books, History of the Tuilleries, by G . Lenotre 1934, Life in The Tuilleries under the second Empire by Anne Bicknell 1895. It is interesting that despite the fire the facade remained and the building could have been reconstructed. The central pavillion was bought and  was rebult on a hill outside Ajaccio....which would be interesting to see.

Since 2003, a committee in France has been proposing to rebuild the Tuileries Palace. This effort is similar to the proposal of reconstruction of the Berliner Stadtschloss (Berlin City Palace). There are several reasons for rebuilding the Palace of the Tuileries. Ever since the destruction of 1883, the famous perspective of the Champs-Élysées, which ended on the majestic facade of the Tuileries Palace, now ends in the Arc du Carrousel, formerly centered on the Tuileries but now occupying a large empty space. The Louvre, with its pyramid on the one hand and the axis of the Place de la Concorde-Champs-Élysées-Arc de Triomphe on the other, are not aligned on the same axis.
The Arc du Carrousel fortuitously stands near the intersection of the two axes. The Palace of the Tuileries, which was located at the junction of these two diverging axes, helped to disguise this bending of the axes. Architects argue that the rebuilding of the Tuileries would allow the re-establishment of the harmony of these two different axes. The Tuileries Gardens would also recover their purpose, which was to be a palace garden.

Also, it is emphasized that the Louvre Museum needs to expand its groundplan to properly display all its collections, and if the Tuileries Palace is rebuilt the Louvre Museum could expand into the rebuilt palace. It is also proposed to rebuild the state apartments of the Second Empire as they stood in 1871. All the plans of the palace and many photographs are still stored in French archives. Furthermore, all the furniture and paintings from the palace survived the 1871 fire because they had been removed from the palace in 1870 at the start of the Franco-Prussian War and stored in secure locations.
Today, the furniture and paintings are still deposited in storehouses and not on public display due to the lack of space in the Louvre Museum. It is argued that recreating the state apartments of the Tuileries Palace would allow the display of these treasures of the Second Empire style which are currently hidden.

[edit]Cost
A rebuilding of the Palace of the Tuileries is estimated to cost 300 million euros (US$ 400 million). It would be financed by public subscription and the work would be undertaken by a private foundation, with the French government spending no money on the project. Since 2003, the idea has gained momentum in French media.

I was wondering just when   this  Swiss guard  was established  as protection for the king and his
family .
Im guessing  that the Swiss  were the main protection.... and it begs the question... why at the time of
the march of the women  in autumn of  1789 .... did the King give in so sheepishly to the bloodthirsty mob and go back with them to Paris ?
Surely this Swiss guard ... in such numbers...  500  plus  ?  was a ring of steel and ... if  given the
right orders ... they could  sort  out any Parisian rabble.

At the  Tuileries  palace  on that fateful day in August 1792  it appears that the Swiss guard were steadfast and loyal
while many of the French militia went over to the mob  so there must have been great confusion on
that day with gunfire coming from all directions.

THATS  very kind  Prinz ..  but maybe... after reading the book, you could  write a paragraph or two
of your impressions... that would be  very interesting.
I ll have to get along to the lib and order a copy to lend
 ( or should that be borrow ? )  !

Interestingly  Paris was in the grip of a heatwave....
it was suffocatingly hot  upon  that  tragic  day ..... perhaps the most horrific  and violent
day of the whole revolution
(wonder if that wimp Lafayette was anywhere around ? )
