The exterior is absolutely fantasticly festive, so actually visiting it was quite a shock, as the numerous chapels inside are very bare, cold and cramped!
But I was struck by the same thing inside the Kremlin too. It really was a culture shock to see that the Tsars' coronation cathedral, although lavisly decorated, was quite small and cramped, compared to a West European cathedral.
