It was not the children's fault, but Liliane turned nasty and remove things and start selling family jewellry. Queen Fabiola cannot stand her stepmother-in-law.

Quite untrue about Liliane always seeming to be this evil stepmother. It's amazing the untruths that are accepted as the gospel truth.

When they moved, they took their OWN things. Period.

Quite a lot of bitterness.

Not more than in most families.

my question was was she very unpopular in belgium and was it just because she was being compared to queen astrid or was her unpopularity unfounded?

SOME people it seems can never get over the fact a lonely, widowed King remarried. They like to believe that Queen Astrid was this perfect saint, and how dare her husband remarry?

Liliane seemed a very fasinating woman. It was her marriage to the widower king that pull down his popularity. She was also a stylish lady like Wallis Simpson, but her fame was that of the wicked stepmother. Once her eldest stepson got married, she showed her true colours. I don't think Fabiola was ever fond of her...

What? A woman who quietly did acts of charity? Who stood by her husband who had his character literally destroyed by those who scapegoated him for the fact England and France were NOT ready in WWII? Who had to live down the "image" of Queen Astrid, the Saint?

Seems like those who scorned her or disliked her without even knowing her were the ones showing their true colours.

The dress and ostentatious jewels of the Princess of Rethy caused a sensation during the evening and then aroused much criticism.
