One last question, but can anybody tell me what Tsarevitch Alexei and his friends are eating and what Alexei has on his head in the picture in my first post? Just an eternally curious mind wondering.

To me, Aleksey looks like he has a glass of something. And knowing kids, they were probably given paper towels and ended up putting them on their heads. Me and my cousins were famous for that at birthday parties.  ;D

That thing on his head is a grow light. Combined with specific amounts of water and miraculous plant food, the grow light works wonders. Soon he will be ready to romance all of the teen girls though they will have to be careful with him as hemophilia still cannot be cured.

P.S the way he writes his letters is pretty similar (formal by moder standards) to how i write email diary, letters and all that stuff
Which goes to show, the langauge of the times has not changed that much!

I see you've met David. There's nothing to get, he was being sarcastic.

Then you must have a big vocabulary! I read in a letter Maria wrote to her mother a word that I've never even heard of before, and she was 14 when she wrote it. It was most likely in English, since Alix wasn't great at Russian. Or maybe it's just me. That happens when you spend most of your day in a high school. Your vocab gets smaller and smaller.  ::)

He is an Australian. They speak the Strailian language there. I have read that it had its origins in English but it has evolved (or devolved) to such an extent that it is now almost impossible for a standard English speaker to understand. Unfortunately for me most Australian films do not come with English subtitles so I have to strain to understand the dialogue.

Just for the record, Grace is also Australian and her posts are almost invariably perfect in terms of spelling and grammar.  ;)

My vote is for everyone to use their best grammar, just as I would hope all of us would be on our best behavior if we were meeting each other in person.

This is a history board, not an Internet cafe, high school hallway, locker room, Jackass III movie set, or any other place where people often display a low level of civility and mental agility. (Though I'm aware that many bright and well-behaved people often occupy the first three.)  A variety of age and education levels are represented on this board, as well as many levels of English proficiency. But those of us who have spoken and written in English since childhood best represent our thoughts, ideas and opinions when we submit posts that are reasonably well composed. To do so is also a sign of consideration for those who typically speak and/or write in another language; if students of Spanish--such as myself--logged into a Spanish language board that displayed sloppy Spanish, our ability to learn the language as it should be learned would be hampered.

Most of us use verbal and written slang and other types of shorthand when communicating with family and friends. But when posting on a fine website such as this one, viewed by people of all ages and from all over the world, why not take the effort to "put your best food forward"?  And in particular, if anyone considers themselves a fairly good writer and/or user of the English language, how about demonstrating it rather than proclaiming it?!

I must agree , Janet_W. I realize that my English is awful, for I'm not fluent in it, since I'm not a native English speaker. But if I could write better than I do, you could be sure that I'll do it.

I noticed (and sadly not only here), that some peoples writes as if they liked not to be understood. I'm better reading English than writing it, so I understand almost all that I read here, but sometimes I got mad realizing how some persons are writing, with grammar errors, mispellings, and no ponctuation at all, without mentioning the absolute ignorance of capital letters after points and to write persons and place's names.

But it seems to be the modern way, snce I see exactly the same in Forums of all languages I 'm able to read: French ones, Spanish ones, Portuguese ones, Italian ones. Really sad.

Please, be respectuous of other people: some persons could find this site to learn about the Romanovs, and English not being their native language, they could not understand what you are trying to said. People is born to communicate, to be understood...But how to be understood if you are not able to explain what you really want to said or what you really feel? And if you are able to do so...Just do it.  :-\

And they said us that we are in the "communication era"..LOL.  ;D :(

RealAnastasia, you're a better english writer than most of the people in my high school!

I don't even like to talk to people on instant messaging if they use chatspeak. It annoys me and makes me crazy.

My friend gave me a birthday card and I couldn't understand it at all because it was completely written in chatspeak. She's better now(though she still uses lol more than anyone I know)but it really annoyed me.
