He wrote a book called "The Russian Diary of an Englishman", which is very hard to find.  I did a search on the net and found a few copies ranging from $68.00 - $142.00.

I have a copy - it's one of the books we'd like to put up on the internet.

elizaveta , in Leslie Field's book, "The Queen's Jewels", Stopford is credited with being able to smuggle out some of Grand Duchess Vladimir's ("Miechen") wondrous jewelry collection, particularly her tiara, which is now worn by Queen Elizabeth II. He must have been an extremely interesting figure of the time. I, too ,would like to know more about him.

I've tried to buy that book for years, but copies are so rare and expensive! It's one I would definitely love to see on the webpage!!!

This is the first time I've really read the forum, and posted anything, and I think it is so great to have a place for discussions and advise on my fav topic.....I'll be back!!!
By the way, years back when I first started searching on the net for web pages on the Romanovs, I typed "Romanov" into Google website, and found your "Alexander Palcae" web site, and it have been the best web site I have seen to date still....many congrats and thanks, you have fuelled my obsession for years!

In the book The Lost Treasures of the Tsar there is quite a bit of information about Stopford and his efforts on behalf of various Romanovs. It also has some information about what happened to him after the war and revolution.

In Serge Obolensky's book, One Man in His Time, he mentions some scandal involving Albert Stopford that caused him to leave England.  Does anyone know what it was all about?

This is just a guess but it probably was a homosexual scandal. Stopford became very close friends with Felix Youssoupov when both attended Oxford. When Felix went down from the university he took a flat in London where he held parties for the cream of English society. He also invited Nijinsky, Pavlova, and Karsvina. Stopford supposedly became famous for dancing "fandangos" with the ballet dancers. Hyde Park was a known pick up place for those interested in sex with young guardsmen.
All this is speculation and the evidence is circumstantial.
Stopford was tried and spent a "year in gaol" for his crime so I assume it is on record in Britain. Perhaps this will entice others with more knowledge to come forward.

Your members might like to know that I am just completing a new book on Albert Stopford and his exploits. It follows my earlier book The Lost Fortune of the Tsars. It may be out next year.

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone can tell me more about Albert Stopford. I believe that he was a relative, and would be particularily interested in any information about his family that could confirm this.
Many thanks
Nags

I welcome a new refreshed appraisal on Bertie Stopford. It will be interesting to compare the older biography with Mr Clarke's publication.

BTW, I too found the book The Lost Fortune of the Tsars an excellent addition to my personal library.

Nags asked about Stopford's family. He was related to the Earl of Courtown, an Irish peerage. In my researches I have found that there are clusters of  Stopfords in the North West of England -- southern parts of Lancashire and Cheshire. Does this help ?

Dear Mr. Clarke:
I am a fond reader of your book The Lost Treasures of the Last Tsar. I have read it three times and it still fascinates me.
I am not particularly interested in Albert Stopford but I will buy your forthcoming book anyway just to see what you have to say because I like the way you write.
There, having poured honey out, I am going to ask my question although I will understand if you don't want to give away any information before the book comes out.
But, nothing ventured nothing gained, so here goes.
In his question above BobG asked what the scandal was about when Stopford was arrested and tried.
I speculated that it involved a homosexual escapade in the park.
Am I right or wrong? Just a short, not specific answer will satisfy both of us. Thanks.

Like many of us, I am a great fan of LOST FORTUNE...as well. I refer anyone who asks to it regarding the Romanov money bucket.
Now, Stopford, I could be way off, but I think he was featured in a PBS/BBC story a while back about the theft of the Irish regalia. Does anyone remember this ?
