Agreed, absolutely.  Leopold II's impact is still being felt today. 

How did he end up being such a monster?  I don't recall his father being that bad?

Leopold I was also greedy and opportunistic, but at least he loved his family (his favourite was Charlotte), while Queen Louise was a saint who did not complain.

Very true.  Leopold II strikes me as a sociopath.

Were there any royals who liked Leopold II? QV liked him when he was a child but could be pretty scathing when he was an adult.

Indeed ! When QV supported Stephanie the right to make a second marriage, he told her to mind her own business. A sour old man ! His cousin Foxy Ferdinand was not any better, his fiest wife Marie Louise suffered much under him and once ran away from him.

IIRC, Foxy was gayer than a picnic basket.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. 

(Just that it wouldn't be much fun for his wife, I would imagine!)

Yes with a Hungarian...Count Lonyay. She seemed to be happy with that marriage. Her father however cut her off and forbid her to come to her mother's furneral. A real meanie ! 

Maria Theresa of Boubon-Parma was a very religious lady (quite a few of her sisters became nuns) and for the children to be of another religion at that period was a fate worse than death. Foxy did not care and continue his fun with his blond minions.

Not only  did he cheat, but he had made a promise to Marie Louise (and the Vatican) that their children would be raised Catholic. Needless to say, they weren't. That will endear you to your wife.

Ferdy may have been a reprobate, but no worse than most. At least he did not rape the country. Not that Bulgaria had that much to ravage. He actually left a great deal more than he ever took.
 Those Coburgs, however, as a lot were less than adirmirable. Then, most of the royals at any given time were, as a rule.

How did Boris work out?  I know his brother had fascist leanings, and some said Boris did as well.

Mo...Boris loved his country and was against Hitler. He had the king choke to death in mid-air. He died for his country. His brother was also killed. Tragic...

Carol II might have been reckless and selfish, but he was not the greedy, cruel monster that Leopold II was by any means.

I do not know much about Leopold II.  However, I never understood why Carol II did the things he did.

Mignon seemed to turn out okay, and so did Nicky and Ileana.  They had their issues, of course, but none of them were as bad as the first two.

I've never liked King George I . . . just seems like an unpleasant character.  Queen Anne (Stuart) is also a pet hate of mine. Just strikes me as a sort of petty, catty women who'd hold a grudge till the end of the world.
