I don't think it referred directly towards her morganatic lineage since it wasn't her Teck hands commented on but her Wurttemburg hands. I think that QM had rather large hands (she almost never had them photographed, either wearing gloves or holding something) and was a bit sensitive about them. It was just a mean-spirited slap (the Wales girls, save for Maud, were very possessive of their only surviving brother) along the lines of Toria's 'she's a dreadful bore' comment.

I have a feeling that what Charly may have said hurt May more than the Wales girls comments did.  >:( Charly was certainly capable of that as even Vicky spoke of it with dread.

A shame you don't have references to back it up.

The author of Battle Royal wrote  Louise was referring to Mays morgantic lineage as the ultimate slur.

My source is straight from royalty and that is good enough for me.  ;)

Not the ultimate slur, May was made to understood that she was not royal enough at an early age. Her title of Serene Highness stood out among the HRH and HIH's in royal gatherings. This fact is very well known.

Sorry that makes no sense at all. Serene Highness is considered lower than HRH and HIH.

May felt inferior because as a Serene Highness she stood out as being of lower rank than the rest

Exactly...She felt her lower status acutely as well as lack of money. It was written that she was genuinely surprise when someone asked for her acutograph at a charity bazaar. "Are you sure you want me...not my cousins ?" she was reputed to have said. I think she would have been too easy a target for the sharp-tongued  Charly.

Yes, I have no doubt you're right. I have read that book  -  and others on the subject. Isn't porphyria a fascinating illness ? Tragic for sufferers, of course. I think it can be traced back to Charles VI of France and beyond him to his mother, Queen Jeanne.

So why were references to her lower status not the ultimate slur? That's what Louise and Toria where getting at. If her title stood out at royal gatherings it's because she was lower than them! Not for anything else Eric!!!!

Partly because it was the truth. Mary Adelaide DID made a messalliance with Francis Teck, who was a product of a morganetic marriage. It is proper according to continental rules of precedence to look down on those of less pure breeds. Queen Olga of Wuttemburg (Grand Duchess of Russia) personaly blocked the Tecks application to be raise to being Dukes of Wuttemberg. I don't need to go down on all the humilations of what the Tecks's relatives the Battenbergs had to suffer in Europe. The morganetics found a haven in QV's court who is friendly towards them (which is unusual). It would be natural for Charly to look down on the poor Tecks & Battenbergs (Remember she shared her brother Willy in matters of this sort).  ???
