Ella on Ernie's Alleged Homosexuality
« on: September 09, 2006, 11:10:44 PM »
I know that such things really weren't talked about in polite society back then, but did Ella ever comment on her brother Ernie's alleged homosexuality and if so, what did she say? I apologize if this has been covered before, but I've never seen it addressed.

I believe she wrote to him at the time she was thinking of becoming a nun, saying something to the effect that she was sure he would understand her decision, given the personal turmoils he had been through (whatever that meant).

Felix Yussopov in his memoirs says that he went to Ella for help and advice about his own sexual orientation issues!

She and Ernie were very close--closer than he and Alix--so I would think that she would have to have had an idea. Even if they didn't talk about it, it obviously didn't affect their relationship. She was also close to Felix and KR.

Thanks you guys, for responding. Grandduchessella, that's sort of what I was getting it -how their relationship was. At the risk of wording this completely wrong and offending someone, as someone who was deeply religious she probably viewed homosexuality as a sin. So that's basically what I was wondering -if that could have been sort of a conflict of interest for her somehow. On the one hand there's her brother that she's very close to and on the other there's the faith she has dedicated her life to. Even though it might have never openly come up in conversation it's nice to know that Ella chose love instead of judgement and harshness with her brother. This is one of the reasons I consider her to be a model for everyone, no matter what their religion.

Indeed. Ella was quite tolerant aboyut homosexual people if you think that her husband and brother were both considered ones. I also believe that Felix told her the truth about himself (think quite a few people already knew) and she was not judgemental as well. I do see a pattern here.  ::)

Well...I am sure she was not replusive over it (considering the amount of gay men she had to deal with...Serge, Ernie, Felix and Konstantine..). Had she been as narrow minded as Dona, she would have probably lost her mind !  ;D

I don't think she ever knew something about GD Konstantin's life which he described in his diaries.

Yes but I have a feeling Marva knew...and there is no secrets in the family. Minny enjoyed  hearing gossip and like to spread some too. Ella could have heard it through the grapevine... :(

There were many secrets in the family, just remember Ella and Sergey's family life - NO ONE knew WHAT was their real private life.
Or do you seriously think that the members of the Imperial Family (like MF) loved to discuss GD Konstantin's sexual orientation  while having five-o'clock tea???

Btw, we are out off topic.

Well...Serge's escapes and cruelties are well known as Xenia's husband was not faithful to her. Read MF's letters to son son Nicholas and you'll see what I mean. Indeed even if we deduct KK, there is still Serge, Ernie (very close to Ella) and Felix to contend. I am quite sure that Ella knew about Ernie and Felix.  ;)

What has it to do with Xenia and Sandro???...

BTW, a bio in Russian on GD Sergey has just issued. Sometimes the text sounds like apologetics and martyrology but anyway the book is quite interesting, especially  it would be a surprise for those readers who apriori consider GD Sergey as homosexual.

I have just received this book a few days ago from Russia, written by ГРИШИН Д. <<Трагическая судьба Великого Kнязя>> [Grishin, D. Tragic Destiny of the Grand Duke]. I look forward to reading it.
